He recalled his separation from Nudar and could not endure it.

A companion of sorrow, he sought consolation but could not find it.

So he kindled a fire within his breast, and it blazed fiercely,

And a torrent of tears poured down like rain.

Nudar, you have made me drink a cup of anguish:

It is loathsome aloe—or its taste is even more bitter.

    إِذا شَرَعَت تَنأى تَداعَت لَها أُخَر

    Nudar, you have left me beset by calamities;

Whenever they begin to recede, others crowd in after them.

Nudar, know that, in heart and body,

I remain beside you; travel gives me no rest.

And I recite God's Book, in secret and openly,

Over you, and pray in the late afternoons and early mornings.

And I shall weep for you as long as the body's spirit remains within it,

And neither weariness nor impatience shall ever overtake me.

I am not like one who lamented his two beloveds for a time,

Then said, when weeping and sleeplessness had grown weary of him:

    وَمَن يَبكِ حَولاً كامِلاً فَقَد اِعتَذَر

    "Until a year has passed—then the name of peace be upon you both;

And whoever weeps a full year has indeed justified himself."

But I weep for you, recalling when we met together,

And my eye beheld your radiant, moonlike face,

And I enjoyed the beauty of your speech; indeed,

Your speech was solace to heart, hearing, and sight.

None among girls is like Nudar, nor does she have

An equal to be seen, among nomads or townsfolk.

Sound of mind—if anyone were compared with one like her

In wisdom, she would be a ruby measured against stone.

    فَإِعرابُهُ زَين القِراءةِ بِالدُّرَر

    And an avid reciter of the Qur'an's verses, which adorn her;

For its proper inflection adorns recitation with pearls.

And she transmits from the master of messengers what was related

By trustworthy narrators in authentic reports with chains of transmission.

And a calligrapher whose reed pen is adorned

By its mastery of script—a delight to whoever looks.

She is not among those women absorbed in adornment,

Who kohl their eyes or wear fine striped robes.

Rather, her concern is the reward she lays up

For the day of return, when the trumpet is blown:

Relieving the distressed and feeding the hungry,

And clothing the naked, and benefiting without harm.

Ah, may the All-Merciful have mercy on a pure soul,

Whose abode was in the world on high.
