A quarter veiled by fate's decree aroused you,
like a book's script whose reader has worn its lettering thin?
Like a book's faint script to its keen peruser.

It changed from soft sand to a hill, and seldom
does the desert gazelle resemble her, or she resemble it.
Does a hyrax or an oryx herd join it.

Where is its gentle beauty and pleasure for him?

A time when the heart answers the caller to youth
and a playful, drowsy glance captured its reason.
And sober reason is led by a drunk, sleepy eye.

A Turk, not reared in Najd, but rather
The Turkish tents were not pitched in glory but rather
raised in a lion's lair, with the lion his guardian.
They pitched in the lion's den while the lion kept guard.

No union, then, save through a sidelong glance
So no connection save from a glance thrown heedlessly,
that meets him openly at times, and steals toward him at others.
Now openly, now furtively, to the secret beloved.

it went forth grim-faced, gray and scowling.
Becoming in the morning a sour, frowning visage.

A howl or specter, surveyed by a broken pillar.

The melodious voice of the beloved softly murmuring to him.

sharp of horn, deadly to whoever clashed horns with it.
Let out a cry, lethal to any who provoked it.

To accompany them, when the grim darkness wrapped them.

It was a faint echo from crumbling cliffs buried in gloom.

Another day I shared golden wine
Another day I would sip golden coffee
with a trustworthy companion, a friend with few misgivings.
With a trusted sister, light and sweetened.

Another day I went early to hear a lovely maiden,
Another day I would listen to the music
delicate in plucking the lute, its player bringing delight.
Of a delicate instrument, its soft strings so melodious.

Another day I let my eyes roam among its flowers,
Another day I would wander through its flowers,
beholding a creation strange in its proportions:
Gazing at a wondrous creation, unique in its qualities.

Some red amid greens along with yellow,

White next to black - synchronized hues.

Another day we spent in sport with a hungry, black-headed hound,
One day I would amuse myself with a coat of mail
with curved fangs and a sidelong gaze.
That had claws, canines, and a defiant glance.

It sniffs the wild beasts' soil, seeking where their lair lies,
Brandishing the dust of desolation - where was its home? -
its nostrils sparing it the need for searching eyes.
Its singing distracted it from the eyes' glances.

How many wild-ox herds it killed, how many great bulls it tore!
So many a slain camel and cloven jerboa saw it,
No hare escaped, nor could an ostrich thwart it.
No frightened hare or hopeless groan left alive.

When we set it on the quarry, I released a follower
When we unleashed it, I sent a follower
behind it, dark-cheeked, with a sharp tearing beak.
After it - plump cheeked, unkempt, intent on the prey.

It flew high then spied prey below,
a fox running, its breathing labored.
My hunting falcon competing with it.

It charged and plunged, clawing its face,
with both wings; the hungry hound arrived to grapple with it.
Wings, the coat of mail, wrestling with it.

The two did not cease until they robbed it of its life;
They did not stop until the two perished,
the weary one and its licker drank their fill of its blood.
Watering an oryx herd that was close with their blood.

How lovely a day, and a second, and a third,
O excellent were the day, the next, the third,
and a delightful fourth day—and this day is the fifth!
The fourth day, and the fifth day that followed.

I would spend my days in bliss and pleasure,
the fifth followed in delight by a sixth.
With the sixth succeeding the fifth in joy.

A monastery secluded in a desolate valley,
its bells guiding the lost to it.
Shown only to wanderers by the tolling bells.

It held flirtatious moons from the daughters of Rum,
It contained beauties from the Greek ladies
and their boys, until its churches overflowed.
And their boys, overcrowding its churches.

Beauty debated there where to make its home:
Beauty contemplated where to settle,
should it choose its gazelles, or its deacons?
On its maidens or choirboys.

I came by night, as a hungry wolf of the wilderness loped,
I arrived and the one who washed clothes busily
having seen a rival whose sudden attacks could not be challenged.
Saw a youth’s thigh - no shame in revealing it.

He leaned forward slightly then sprang up eagerly,
but an arrow checked it, cutting short its aim.
But an arrow diverted him from his aim and stopped him.

I injured him slightly then soundly,
and its limbs and joints were severed.
His limbs severed and his crosses shattered.

I was in view of the monastery's people, and then
I was in view of the monks so their superior
its priests stroked and kissed my palm.
Took liberties, kissing and fondling my palms.

I saved them from an oppressor whose habit

Was injustice when darkness wrapped his clothes.

Frequenting horizons, his travels great.

He saw me silent, taciturn, so thought me
his absurdities; the old man had countless plots.
Susceptible to delusions - among their prey.

The poor man did not know that I am the one
his delusive fancies could influence me.
Who read letters beyond the reach of any writer.

And composed poetry on oceans of knowledge -
too many for its indexes to hold when counted.
