وَكانَتand she was بِهاthrough her روحيmy soul تَلَذُّtakes delight وَتَغتَذِيand is nourished
Can I hope for life after the loss of Zumurrud?
Do I hope for life after losing Zumurrud,
Through her my soul found delight and nourishment.
Who was the soul that delighted and nourished me?
زُمُرُّدُZumurrud قَدindeed خَلَّفتِyou have left للصَّبِّfor the lovesick one لَوعَةًanguish

Zumurrud, you have left your lovesick one anguish,
Zumurrud left behind agony for the young man
and sorrow that seizes every part of my heart.
And sorrow that gripped my heart and took hold

You shot an arrow into the midst of a wounded heart,
You shot an arrow into the midst of a wounded heart
as though it bore the stroke of a sharpened sword.
As if the sharp sword fell upon it
فَحَصَّنتُهُso I fortified it بِالصَبرِwith patience فيكِconcerning you وَعِندَماand when

So I fortified it with patience in you, and when
you twanged the bow, the arrow reached it through every opening.
It beat, the arrow came to it from every outlet

From my eye comes an eyelid's sleeplessness, as though
From my eyelid comes the sleeplessness of an eye as if
night passes a hedgehog's hide over it.
The night passes over it like a hedgehog

And from my hearing, an ear listening for your voice always
and from my nose, a longing for your sweet fragrance.
And from my nose, a longing for your gentle scent

And from my mouth come breaths of fire that course back and forth
And from my smile, the breaths of fire that went
over a burning liver and a bewitched mind,
Over a burning liver and obsessed mind

touched by a fit of madness and wild confusion,
In it are touches that have affected it and confusion
so neither incantations nor prayers for protection can set it right.
So it cannot be led by incantations or amulets

My daughter Nadira—her daughter—went before her,
Her daughter Nadira bint presented it
and both were gathered in a burial niche that was not [unclear].
And they were both compiled in an atheist who was not gentle

We were 'who,' with my relative clause and a resumptive pronoun;
And we were the ones with connections to me and returning
and both have been deleted; nothing remains of it but 'who.'
And they were both omitted, nothing remained but that which

And forbearance was her adornment; her mind was steadfast, not
And the adornment of wisdom, her mind was steadfast so
swayed by any charlatan's deceptions.
It is not affected by the illusions of any sorcerer

And alongside beauty of form, she possessed a gentle character,
And she gained good morals for good behavior
and gentle, pure speech, never foul.
And soft, pure words that are not vile

So she never sullied her mouth by speaking ill of the absent,
So she did not sully her mouth with the absence of an absent one
nor withheld a gift from anyone who came seeking one.
And did not prevent sustenance from one who came seeking

She knew all kinds of goods sold

And if an oculist and a physician came to her,
And if a kohl seller or a doctor came to her
she matched them both, so they submitted to becoming pupils.
They submitted to being her students

My mind changed after my body;
My mind changed after my body
so my reason would not accept exorcists' incantations.
So my intellect did not accept the decisions of charms

I see it as if the thorns of bindweed entwined it

And if I attempted to sit, worries came one after the other
cares that tug at my soul whenever they cling to it.
Whenever it clung to my soul and pulled

So my heart is in sorrow and my eye is in tears
ah, what anguish between this heart, lodged in sorrow, and this eye!
Oh how strange is the lament between one who has settled and one who is confused

You were stingy until even an apparition is not visiting
during the slumber of one distracted and broken-hearted.
At the bedside of one oblivious of heart, shaken
