Are you taking away, between estrangement and union,

My reason? Does nothing please you but my reason?

And you who deny me her company even from afar,

Perhaps you have broken with your phantom for visiting me.

And you who decree estrangement between me and her,

As though you had found no path to justice.

Ah, may my father ransom those sweet ways,

Though they have left me scattered, unreunited.

And oh, how delightful that love-inspiring coyness,

Though it leaves me preoccupied all day.

And lovely speech—whenever I said, 'They have grown rugged,'

Its passes led me to the shelter of level ground.

So it went, until it brought me to a brink:

This was earnestness, not the jesting I had been in.

And from what lay there it mixed a wine for me,

Its taste entices, and its fragrance consoles.

I did not loathe it; rather, it grew impertinent, so I refused it.

Then chastity said, 'Drink, for you are free to do so.'

An impatience came upon me, though I did not doubt your affection,

Seizing the breaths of little letters and messengers.

You marked this age with it; if it loses its way,

That is nothing new in its heedless nature.

Ah, may my father ransom you! Bring all your pride,

And take my abasement; you left me nothing but abasement.

O my master—not that I grant to anyone other than him

Such lordship, save as a disguise of deception and guile.

And O kohl of my eyelids, though slumber prevails

Over them—and kohl may indeed irritate the eyelids—

Listen, without being commanded, to the bitterness of a burning grief:

When my tears surge, its cauldron bubbles and boils.

You spoke truly: I am the offender. Is there any remnant

That hints at one like you feeling shame before one like me?

An excuse is needed, though it is not clear,

But yours is the excellence appointed to judge excellence.

Tell me about the one you favor, and [unclear]:

Is he like rain, or am I like drought-stricken land?

Was it when he called me and claimed me, and I found

Only his judgment, now against me and now in my favor,

That I accepted hurt from him, as though grasping

At water, or chasing a shadow's trail?

I tug with her at love's rope, while she winds it,

And both my palms have swollen from the rope's marks.

She goes evening and morning whenever I say, 'She has drawn near,'

Her words are not my words, nor are her deeds my deeds.

And I and the one I love were—you brought it about—

At the outcome of a matter neither bitter nor sweet.

And by God, I never denied your lead in reaching the heights,

But I took my time until I caught up.

Mercy, mercy! Do not send my Jarwal's ambitions soaring,

Lest we make the folk of Dhuhl's little village suffer through them.

And I know of no offense against you,

Except a tenderness that undermines your sound judgment.

    تجدْني إذا قلتَ البدارَ على رجْل

    Lend me a heart as patient as your own;

You will find me on my feet when you say, 'Hurry!'

    ولستُ على شيءٍ تُحِبُّ بِمُعْتَلِّ

    And take whatever you love, other than me and him;

I offer no excuses over anything you love.

If you insist on haste [wording unclear], now that you wield it

Over me, Hanifa has indeed strayed far from Ijl.

And if it is the other case, and you are Muhajir,

Why do you not weep in sorrow to al-Fadl?

May God be with you! Let not anger take you down a road

That frightens you on my account, between the mount and the saddle.

And if you have the stronger claim to self-restraint and reason,

Then I have the stronger claim to waywardness and folly.
