And existence singled me out for every excellence,
Which foe and friend alike have acknowledged.

وَلَستُand I am not بِماقتٍresenting جَورَthe injustice of اللَياليthe nights
So I do not reproach the sons of my age,
Nor do I resent the injustice of the nights.
كَفانيsuffices me رُتبةًas a rank أَنthat صرتI have become فَرداًpeerless
فَماليso I have no فيin المَعاليnoble attainments مِنany مِثالِequal
It is rank enough for me that I have become peerless,
So I have no equal in noble attainments.

Whenever I appear on a horizon before people,
They point with their fingers, as at the crescent moon.

When they say 'Abu Hayyan,' there is eagerness
Among the foremost men to see me.

And they wish I might be their confidant,
So they may gain insights and noble attainments.

إِذاwhen الأَفهامُminds صارَتhave become فيin عِقالِa hobble
I unravel for them the obscurities of difficult problems,
When minds have become bound in fetters.
وَأُفصِحُand I express clearly عَنabout مَعانٍmeanings غامِضاتٍobscure
إِذاwhen خَرسَfalls mute الفَصيحُthe eloquent speaker لَدىat المَقالِdiscourse
And I express obscure meanings clearly,
When the eloquent speaker falls mute in discourse.
وَكانَand was الدَهرُthe age عُطلاًunadorned مِنof إِمامٍa leader
فَأَضحىso became جيدُهُits neck بيwith me وَهوَand it is حالِadorned
And the age was unadorned, without a leader;
So its neck became adorned with me.

I followed a path in sacred law that had been
The people's path in ages long gone.

فَأَدرَكتُso I attained القَصِيَّthe most distant مِنof المَنالِattainable goals
And I forsook dogmatism in some matters,
So I attained the most distant of goals.

وَهَلand does لِلنَقصِfor imperfection علمٌknowledge بِالكَمالِof perfection
Yet the sons of my age do not know me,
And does imperfection have knowledge of perfection?
رَأَواthey saw شَبحاًa figure يُشاكِلُهُمresembling them فَقاسواso they reasoned by analogy
بِأَنيthat I am مِثلُهُمlike them وَالفَرقُwhile the difference عالِis great
They saw a figure resembling them, so they reasoned by analogy
That I am like them, though the difference is great.
وَلَوand if كانَwere القِياسُanalogy يُفيدُyielding شَيئاًanything

And if analogy were of any use,
Then rock would be of the same kind as pearls.

I dwelt in their Egypt for twenty years,
And five more, dictating the choicest lectures.

So I did not sully my hopes with money
Of theirs, ever; nor did they know my circumstances.

غَنيself-sufficient بِالعِلمthrough knowledge عَنwithout need of خَوَلٍservants وَمالِand wealth
Such is the nature of one indifferent to what they possess,
Rich through knowledge, with no need of servants or wealth.
