    And a fair-skinned, delicate one met me with beauty,

    and a sweet, brown-skinned one—both became a temptation to humankind.

    So this one drew from his eyelids a white sword to strike,

    and that one brandished from his flanks a brown spear to pierce.

    فَأَيُّهما يَنأى فَصفوي تَكَدَّرا

    And I have become preoccupied with loving them both at once;

    so if either of them draws away, my serenity is clouded.

    وَإِن يبعُدا عَنّي أَرى المَوتَ أَحمَرا

    And if they both draw near, my life is sweet;

    and if they both go far from me, I see death as red.

    So, if only my heart had troubled itself with just one,

    so it might find contentment in him—but my heart has split in two.

    So one half lies with someone unaware of it,

    and one half with a gazelle who knew of it, yet did not know.

    So, what a wonder: the lover's heart was divided

    by love for two! This heart is the most wondrous thing one sees.
