And a day we spent in joy and pleasure,

exchanging the threads of polished conversation.

    مَكارِمُهُم خَلقٌ بِغَيرِ تَخَلُقِ

    Loyal boon companions, with no estrangement among them;

their noble qualities are innate, without affectation.

They have suckled from the cup of concord, so you see

no disagreement among them in deed or speech.

We gathered around a pool whose water was clear

and delicate, like our characters, never muddied.

We swam in it, and our swimming roused the jealousy

of geese, which outstripped us, calling and gathering.

And a waterwheel, through its prolonged weeping, resembled,

with its plaintive cry, a lover full of longing.

Though its eyelid was too narrow for its tears,

its ribs were not too narrow to let them flow.

It wept, showing us the world laughing as it wept,

and lamented, putting the collared doves to shame.

Amid the gardens a square pavilion enclosed us,

like a necklace on a neck, or a crown upon a head.

The radiant sun cast her glance upon us,

stealing a look, the gaze of one who yearns.

Through the lattices of her light she cast upon us

a ray resembling the pattern of an embroidered mantle.

Whenever her ray met the water,

how brilliantly it glittered upon the walls!

The shadow from her danced along its walls

when the water rippled in the east wind.

She disappeared, and the full moon spent the night guarding us for her,

watching over us for fear of separation.

Though she was forcibly drawn toward the west,

before long she would appear in the east.

How strange that the two luminaries should yearn

for us, while the one we love feels no yearning!

Yet no wonder: like longs for like,

and in passion becomes deeply attached to it.

We have a gathering with companions who seem

to have drunk from cups of unclouded affection:

stars whose dwelling has become the ether,

traveling and rising toward the highest honor.

    Whenever a sacred, noble breeze

blows, we smell the fragrance of musk released.

Whenever we pass around the cups of their conversation,

we grow drunk on something sweeter than aged wine.

Conversation that captivates minds, and a form

made perfect—the desire of listener or beholder.

    فَقُل ما تَشا فيهِ مِن الخَيرِ تَصدُقِ

    Sharaf al-Din has encompassed every noble quality;

say whatever good you wish of him, and you speak truth.

Indeed, his innate qualities were molded in a noble youth,

most far-reaching in kindness, most faithful to a pledge.

He binds hopes with freely released wealth,

and gathers friends through bounty scattered abroad.

He fears meeting a reproachful friend,

but feels no concern for gathering wealth.

Even as his means diminish, his generosity increases,

and modestly he overlooks a fool's insolence.

None who harms his enemies finds success

with him, nor does a seeker of his bounty fail.

And his affiliation to al-Quds—what an affiliation!

It signifies cleansing from every ruinous sin.

His leadership in learning is established for us

by explicit text, consensus, and the discerning scholar's judgment.

His soul whispers the sciences to him, while another man

takes refuge in assembling patched-together words.

All the sciences have been inscribed upon his breast:

how noble a scholar, radiant and bright of soul!

Their genus faced the mirror of his mind,

and every verified kind appeared within it.

    His improvisation outstrips another's deliberation,

and his thought has defeated every brilliant master.

Fingers through which eloquence appears richly adorned

in dark script upon bright parchment,

with verse like bright stars swimming in the Milky Way,

and prose like blossoms after a copious shower.

And a mind from which fire seems to have been kindled:

but for his bounty's moisture, whoever approached would burn.

And generosity from which the clouds seem to have learned:

but for discernment, whoever received would drown.

    همى فَكَأنَّ الجودَ بِالبَحرِ مُلتَقِ

    He stood firm, as though the mountain imitated his steadfastness;

he poured forth, as though generosity had met the sea.

When rhymes disobey other people, they

obey him in whatever he wishes, and he selects.

Though people consult their notebooks, he does not

consult anything but his overflowing thought.

Though their flints should one day fail to spark, he

surely kindles with them the scorching fire of intelligence.

    No difficulty but becomes plain,

and nothing closed but becomes open.

Eloquent in speech when their Quss falls silent,

ample in scope when they find themselves in a strait.

He smooths what was rugged; how often

his literary arts have renewed every threadbare thing for us!

When Muhammad's verses are recited among the people,

you see every listener bow his head as he attends.

    يَطيحُ لَدَيهِ نَظم كُلِّ مُخرِّقِ

    He produces inimitable marvels of exquisite verse;

before him, every showy poet's verse collapses.

And Ali, our Musa's son, was aided:

he brought fragments that gleamed like pure jewels.

He fashioned them as peerless pearls among mankind,

    combining originality with beautiful refinement.

They had a lack; then, to complete them, came

Ibn Musa, with perfectly fitting words.

His verse resembled the other's as he imitated it, as though he were

    Jarir, competing with al-Farazdaq's verse.

If he is not the very man, he is surely his counterpart,

meeting in love of Layla what the other met.

Together they set her most wondrous image in the mind,

delicate in meaning, lucid and delightful in diction.

They veiled her jealously, lest she be attained by

a young man unworthy of generosity and almsgiving.

How often they lay awake for her in delight, and kept others awake!

Whoever loves Layla keeps others awake and lies awake.

They made no mere claims about her; rather, each

was given love to drink by night, in leafing wine.

    مِن أَندلسٍ لِلقُدسِ تَسري وَتَرتقي

    A time grew fair for her, and her radiance shone;

from al-Andalus to al-Quds she journeys by night and rises.

Hidden indeed has grown the matter that seems plain

concerning Layla; she has beguiled the fortunate and the wretched.

How many a poor man she made despair, who never attained her,

and how many owners of gold and silver she bankrupted!

He saw a moon that had become a sun, and was deceived

by color changing amid clarity and brilliance.

That was only the blush of shame, which

soon disappears with processing and a crucible.

In Layla's affair, neither I, my son, nor his son

can equal Ali or pious Muhammad.

    أَخُوه بِلا شَكٍّ سُقي فَضلَ ما سُقِي

    Ali resembles Muhammad in character;

his brother surely drank the remainder of what he was given.

Indeed, Ali stands to worthy Muhammad

as Harun to Musa—so runs the saying.

How many a white hand of kindness he has brought us!

Thus Ibn Musa enriched every dusty, destitute man.

O great tree of merit, whose root is good,

spreading over us the shade of leafy, branching boughs!

    فَها أَنا عَن تَقييدِهِ غَيرُ مُطلَقِ

    Your bounty has embraced many, and singled me out;

here I remain bound to record it.

Those who have lived in your time imagine

they have matched you; vain are such believers' hopes!

A shallow pool with its pebbles showing cannot resemble

a sea swelling and brimming with knowledge.

That other is a pretender to learning, ignorant,

with a spurious lineage among the eminent.

He counts miserliness praiseworthy, and self-exaltation eminence:

what a fine wide-mouthed, pompous babbler!

Have they not seen humility as your nature,

and clouds of bounty like a flashing storm cloud?

Blue-gray doves came to bounty, while they circled

above it; one who drinks is not like one circling overhead.

Take, then, Nasir's praise of Muhammad,

and leave al-A'sha's verse on al-Muhallaq's bowls.

Through praising you I rose above my companions, and

I deemed them too noble to praise any overbearing man.

Inimitable meanings and lofty words came to me,

surging in my breast, battalion after battalion.

Deep in the night I pondered which I would compose,

and held nocturnal converse with them, choosing and selecting.

I shun the outlandish, harsh to hear,

and bring close the familiar, gentle in approach.

Whenever a verse passes, its counterpart follows it

swiftly; even if I summon no other, it comes behind.

Neither thought is strained nor poetry obscure,

but it is like the sea: when it swells, it overflows.

It is as though the rhymes knew for whom

they were composed, so they poured in; the strong take the lead.

They appeared before us as scattered pearls; yet

stringing adorns pearls after they lie apart.

I perfected the stringing of verse until it seemed that I

drew its excellence from the sea of your knowledge.

    This utterance excelled only because

it contained the traits of the generous man who gives me voice.

I, in offering you verse, am like one who

brings a trickle to someone with overwhelming waters.

The spirit of your holiness has breathed into my heart,

and has ascended with my spirit toward your heights.

God curse an age in which a worthy man gains nothing

of good fortune but a scrap of barely sustaining life.

An age in which the lowest float, just as

the highest, those of true attainment, sink in it.

The royal seat has never ceased to yearn for you,

while every utter fool's defects are cloaked.

Should one like you be stripped of its lofty honors,

when one without a peer has every right to lead?

Indeed, if you were its confidential secretary,

it would wear wondrous, finely wrought embroidery,

and the most eloquent scholar would express its meaning

in concise words or expansive speech.

    سَعدتَ بِهِ إِذ كانَ غَيرُكَ قَد شَقِي

    You held back from seeking that, thereby advancing;

you found happiness through it, while another suffered.

Honor lies only in freedom from worldly things,

and abasement only in being ranked with a fool.
