A paradise fashioned for what the soul desires
A paradise was built for what the soul desires
and what delights the discerning beholder's eyes.
And for what delights the eyes of the insightful

Its land is of marble and pearls of shells
which they brought from the seas' jutting outcrops.

Rivers of wine replaced water,
And the houris of paradise with the heavenly maidens
and male houris replaced female houris:
Of youths excused and well-mannered

young men with down on their cheeks, and beardless youths,
Who are good at lying above the beds
adept at repose upon the bed,
With silk pillows adorned with rubies

Resting atop their chests
with pearls swaying above their waists.

So youths go round to them within it,
With jugs of aged wines
with pitchers of aged wines—

Formed with the best of skill
fashioned in the loveliest of forms.

Figures like suns, gleaming with light;
Wearing in war skins of tigers
in battle they wore leopard skins.
So they are in strength cubs of lions

So in combat they are lion cubs,
And in repose resembling heavenly maidens
and in bed they are the likenesses of houris.

Non-Arabs, like wild beasts by nature,
Refined by the kindnesses of civilization
tamed by the gentle arts of handling,

In bounty, bliss and joy
in luxury, fresh bloom, and joy;

Like the oncoming rain for the stream
were like a serpent coming to the pool.
So if they let down their hair it would cover

Then, when they unbound their hair, veiled were
The pages of the full moons with darkness
the faces of the full moons in pitch darkness.

And listening to the lute and tambourine
and listening to the oud and the tanbur?
