A grievous calamity has befallen us, and it makes me ill.

So throughout the night my eye remains unclosed.

And my tears pour down, and my heart throbs,

sorrowful; my longing is constant and never ends.

Yearning for her whom Dhukāʾ, the sun, resembled

in brilliance, light, and radiant appearance.

Yet she was distinguished from it by intellect and discernment,

and knowledge and beneficence, together with good character.

A maiden whom beauty seemed to love,

yielding to her in whatever she loved and approved.

So she came with all beauty filling her robe,

while her peers came with beauty made repellent.

And she added virtues to this beauty,

whose like was granted to none but Nuḍār:

knowledge she revealed to teach the ignorant,

favors she bestowed with red gold and white silver.

So her red coin, the dinar, was fire for a petitioner,

and her dirham, the silver coin, a pearl for those who received it.

And though she turned away from us, as our Lord willed,

my heart will not turn away from her throughout my life.

She died when Dhukāʾ appeared and shone

for us in her place—what an ugly substitute!

So sorrow was left in hearts torn apart,

and in eyes overflowing with tears and blood.
