    A gazelle fawn from among the Turks has captivated me,

    With a jewel-like mouth and musk-scented breath.

    He resembles a bough, a full moon, and a sand dune,

    In quivering, radiance, and graceful sway.

    واسعُ الوَجنَةِ خَزِّيُّ المَجَس

    Narrow-eyed, both his eyes Turkish;

    Broad-cheeked, silken-soft to the touch.

    ما لَهُ لا يَجتَني مِما غَرَس

    My gaze plants the roses upon him;

    Why does it not pluck some of what it has planted?

    Together, the scorpion-curls at his two temples have become

    Guards for the ripe roses on his cheek.

    And the serpent of his braid began

    Wandering along his side whenever he quivered.

    إِنَّما أرهبُ لحظاً قَد نَعَس

    I do not fear his sword or his spear;

    I dread only a glance grown drowsy.

    إِنَّ أَهنا الوَصلِ ما كانَ خَلَس

    We stole a reunion with him after estrangement;

    Indeed, the sweetest union is what is stolen.

    I cannot forget him as he brought forth from

    His palm a sun that shone in the predawn gloom.

    And he cast aside the turban, and there appeared to us

    A fine parting of hair, revealing what had been obscure.

    فَاعترتهُ هَزَّةٌ مِما لَمَس

    He touched the cup to drink it;

    So a shiver seized him at what he touched.

    Then he brought a jewel close to a jewel,

    And sipped the cup in a single breath.

    And he began wiping with the handkerchief what

    The wine had left upon those dusky lips.

    What a wonder, the wine and he! It laughed aloud

    As he sipped it, though it had made him frown.
