As though Abu Hafs, the valiant youth, had never been borne
As if Abu Hafs, a valiant youth, did not answer
By the night and white, nobly bred young she-camels
The night's call, nor the white tents, the fleet she-camels.

Of noble character, while grievous calamities passed him by.
Young men did not guide him, nor misfortunes impede him.

And he drove highbred, pale she-camels until they seemed,
He works the wood of 'Utaq as if when
When their saddlecloths were removed, like clothes-racks.
The ruling coats-of-mail are removed from it.

Far-reaching in the paths of his resolve, at evening he had no
Far from the abodes of care he spends the evening,
Companion but God and the long, keen sword.
With none but Allah, and a javelin-throwing companion.

If his doorway feels desolate, how often
If he encounters a wild beast at his abode,
Processions came to him, throng after throng,
Cavalcades may come thronging to him.

They greet a countenance whose crescent forehead
A crescent that appeared, with the clouds clearing away from it.
Was shining, though now concealed by the clouds.

One who is gone is not truly absent if his return is hoped for;
He who is absent is hoped to return,
But he who has been laid in the grave is absent.
But he who is buried in the grave is absent.
