Ah, raven of parting, why do you cry out?

For your voice is hateful to me, ugly.

And every morning, as you strike out on your own course, you turn

toward me and meet me, watchful.

You tell me I shall find no blessing.

May you be banished; may I not spend an evening beside you while you cry.

And if one day you do not stir my grief, then indeed

    a clear-voiced, gray-bellied dove will destroy you.

    I remembered—remembrance consumes the lover's heart—

while they leaned in the desert of al-Khubayt,

a beloved from whom distance kept you; then there streamed

onto the breast tears from a freely weeping eye.

If it exhausts its water today, it wakes

tomorrow, its inner corners replenished, pouring freely.

I remained; they had departed by night, and off sped

a herd bearing them, with outward-turned elbows and splayed legs.

Then one day I met them, riding a Fiṭriyya camel,

while the pale camels bore the weight of those within the curtained litters.

And a woman said, 'But for love, it would not have braved

the gray, windblown dust, bearing him toward you—a worn-out mount.'

On the day we set out, heading for her land, there appeared

a rightward-crossing bird; the company said, 'A rightward bird has passed.'

Some men among them took fright and hung back.

So I told them, 'My neighbor is gainful to me:

an eagle on the heels of departure from the dwelling, after

a far-flung journey had unfolded, making the lover forget.'

    وطلح فريرت والمطي طليحُ

    And they said, 'Doves—so meeting her is ordained;

and acacias—so [unclear verb]—while the riding camels are weary.'

And my companions said, 'A hoopoe above a bān tree—

love, and a clear sign of success shining forth.'

And they said, 'Blood! May the pledges between us endure,

and may pure, sweet affection endure for us.'

Surely your eyes, on the day of parting, streamed faster

than a rain-drenched bough when stirred by the wind.

And women of a vigilant, jealous man whom they fear—

a trustworthy man—you make merry while he keeps watch.

They spoke, unaware of me; I heard their words,

as they leaned at the entrances of the tents:

'Is this the one who sang of a dusky woman late at night?

A bestower has granted him the beauty of song.

Whenever he sings, he moans after a deep sigh,

as a wounded man moans from the burning pain of weapons.'

And a woman said, 'O Dahm, alas for you! He is,

despite the nasal tone in his voice, truly charming.'

And a woman said, 'Treat him stingily; indeed, he is

eloquent in whatever lying speech he chooses.'

So if speech could wound the skin, there would surely appear

upon my skin wounds from the slanderers' words.

Whenever I say, 'Its water will run out today,' it wakes

tomorrow, its two inner corners brimming, still pouring.
