Ah, O deserted dwelling, will you not speak?
O powerful quarter, speak!
May morning rainclouds water you with downpours falling in bursts,
The valleys have quenched you with pools from above,

spring showers of the season's first rain, their vigor driven
Springs and a driving swiftness lead its vigor,
by hot gusts of the east wind in the flashing cloud.
The heat of the morning breeze in the shining slope,

And you are only what I see now, after I once saw
And you are but what I see after I see
the tribe's handiwork in a guise delightful to my eye.
The hand of the Alive in the dress with my eyes flourishing,

A raven calls on a day when the heart's reason is not
A raven calling on a day when neither the heart senses its reason
sound, nor is the company I turn toward reunited.
Nor the people who have met on the road straight,

شقيت بتحجال الغراب المتعق
May you be repaid with evil, raven of separation! How often
May the raven of separation be evil for it has long
I have suffered from the hopping of the croaking raven.
Made me suffer with the pretentiousness of the devious raven,

وعللت شيطان النويِّ المشوِّق
Indeed, how often I have wearied the mount of youthful passion,
For long I have intended the caravan of youth
and soothed the longing-stirring demon of separation.
And fancied the tempting devil of flirtation,

And I treated the heart's wound from them with wishes,
And I have cured the wound of the heart with wishes
and with a furtively stolen glance, if they would grant it.
And with a glance, if they would offer it taken aback,

رقاق الثنايا عذبة المتريق
They shared love's cup with me, and I served it in return—
And they made me drink the cup of love and I made them drink
women with delicate front teeth and sweet saliva.

And a radiant woman who parts her lips in a smile,
And tinkling that reveals a smiling one
like daisy blossoms, sweet to taste.
Like the light of blisters, good to taste,

When she sucks, after the forenoon has advanced,
If she wipes herself after enjoyment from the morning,
jointed lengths of perfumed arak wood,
Pipes from fragrant wood, tattooed,

she waters the toothstick's frayed fibers with raincloud water,
I would water the dishevelment of the water-skin
freshly flowing, mingled with Iraq's fine, clarified wine.
Noisily with the Iraq hose clapping,

For if you taste her mouth after the dew has fallen
So if I tasted her mouth after the dew has fallen
on the two flanks of a buxom woman, ample at the girdle,
With my shoulder, with the mouth of Raddah speaking,

I would smell the green perfumed grove

You choke on the fragrance of her cheeks, as though
She has shone with a face whose cheek
you had choked on Iraq's aged wine [reading uncertain].
Shone like the house of Iraq adorned.
