أَشعارُ مَرجِ الكُحلِ فيها عِبرَةٌ

أَشعارُ مَرجِ الكُحلِ فيها عِبرَةٌ

تُذكِي الهُمومَ وَتُنتِجُ الأَحزَانا

تُذكِي الهُمومَ وَتُنتِجُ الأَحزَانا

The poems of Marj al-Kuhl hold a lesson:

The verses of Marj al-Kuhal have wisdom

They kindle worries and beget sorrows.

That kindles sorrows and produces griefs

فَإِذا رَمى المِقدارُ مِنهُ بِمَدحَةٍ

فَإِذا رَمى المِقدارُ مِنهُ بِمَدحَةٍ

ضَرَّ الأَنامَ لِيَنفَعَ الوَزّانا

ضَرَّ الأَنامَ لِيَنفَعَ الوَزّانا

So when fate casts forth a poem of praise from him,

So when fate casts praise from it

It harms humankind to benefit al-Wazzan.

It harms people, to benefit the tyrant
