May Aleppo’s soil be watered as long as you dwell there,

O full moon, by two rains—one pouring down, the other gushing forth.

I journey away from it, while my heart is set on staying there,

As though my colt were held back by the journey’s weight.

Even so, were it not for what lies in its rider’s heart

Of anguish, no horse would stir beneath him.

As though the earth and the towns were desolate,

And its abode alone among them were peopled and welcoming.

Like the pebble that is forever thrown

Toward the sky: it rises, then falls back.
