Will you not pity a lovesick, enamored man?

Do you know what he endures, or do you not know?

And though you have escaped unharmed from cares,

you surely know that I have not escaped unharmed.

And though you have obeyed the women who reproach you, I

have defied the words of my reproachers and fault-finders.

And when you pass by the dwellings early in the morning,

convey greetings of peace to the dwellings of al-Haytham.

A radiant beauty smiles, revealing a rising dawn

from her mouth, in the midst of a dark night.

She dispels darkness with a smiling mouth that dispels the gloom.

My father and mother be a ransom for the sweetness of that smiling mouth!

How many a night, pale when she appeared before us,

was like a black day when she turned away.

    سَيّانِ إِن كَتَمَت وَإِن لَم تَكتُمِ

    She concealed my love and answered it with estrangement;

it is all the same whether she concealed it or did not.
