ماصاحِبيmy friend is none إِلّاexcept الَّذيthe one who مِنfrom بِشرِهِhis good cheer
ماصاحِبي إِلّا الَّذي مِن بِشرِهِ
عُنوانُهُits sign فيin وَجهِهِhis face وَلِسانِهِand his tongue
عُنوانُهُ في وَجهِهِ وَلِسانِهِ
My friend is only he whose good cheer
Has its sign in his face and on his tongue.
كَمmany a صاحِبٍfriend لَمdid not أَغنَdispense عَنwith إِنصافِهِhis fair dealing
كَم صاحِبٍ لَم أَغنَ عَن إِنصافِهِ
فيin عُسرِهِhis hardship وَغَنيتُand I had no need عَنof إِحسانِهِhis generosity
في عُسرِهِ وَغَنيتُ عَن إِحسانِهِ
Many a friend whose fair dealing I could not dispense with
In his hardship, though I had no need of his generosity.
