    Is what I see from you fierceness or generosity?

    You give your life freely while souls are cut down.

    O giver of life and wealth, smiling,

    does neither death nor destitution appall you?

    Indeed, I thought that, between the two armies, you believed

    that safety from the spears' blows brings disgrace.

    حَياةُ صاحِبِها تَحيا بِها الأُمَمُ

    I implore you by God: do not give away a noble life;

    nations live through the life of its possessor.

    It is courage, yet it is excess,

    and all your excellence is beyond moderation or measure.

    When you meet the slender white blades alone,

    beneath the dust-cloud, attendants are not reckoned many.

    You ransom with your life men you have made what they are,

    though it was their duty to ransom you themselves.

    And who can fight those you face in battle,

    when neither cavalry nor champions are left after you?

    You withhold warfare from us as a miser would,

    yet in every circumstance your generosity is known.

    Do not be miserly toward men: if they are killed,

    the sons of battle praise you, rather than them.

    عُرِّفتَ ماعَرَفوا عُلِّمتَ ماعَلِموا

    You were clothed in what they wore, mounted on what they rode;

    you were acquainted with what they knew, taught what they knew.

    As you were shown, with white blades you yourself bestow,

    on your horses they plunged into the sea—and it was blood.

    فَإِن رَأَوكَ فَأُسدٌ وَالقَنا أَجَمُ

    They are the horsemen, with spears in their hands;

    but if they see you, they are lions, and the spears are thickets.

    وَاِرتاحَ في جَفنِهِ الصَمصامَةُ الخَذِمُ

    They said, 'March!' and the spear shook its upper shaft;

    and the keen, swift-cutting sword stirred eagerly in its sheath.

    And a hand demanded of me what would distress the foes,

    which I had accustomed to what the wolf and vultures crave.

    لَولا فِراقُكَ لَم يوجَد لَهُ أَلَمُ

    Truly, a matter for which I was named has distressed me;

    but for parting from you, there would be no pain in it.

    إِنَّ الشَآمَ عَلى مَن حَلَّهُ حَرَمُ

    Do not occupy me with the charge of guarding Syria;

    indeed, Syria is a sanctuary for whoever dwells there.

    صُحورُهُ مِن أَعادي أَهلِهِ قِمَمُ

    For the frontier has a wall of the awe he inspires;

    its rocks are the heads of its people's enemies.

    May Sayf al-Din never deprive me of his company,

    for it is the life through which souls live.

    And I have not opposed him in his commands,

    but I asked, and 'yes' is one of his customary answers.
