إِنَّindeed فيin الأَسرِcaptivity لَصَبّاًsurely a lovelorn man
إِنَّ في الأَسرِ لَصَبّاً
دَمعُهُhis tears فيon الخَدِّthe cheek صَبُّstreaming
دَمعُهُ في الخَدِّ صَبُّ
Indeed, in captivity is a lovelorn man;
his tears stream down his cheek.
هُوَhe فيin الرومِthe land of the Byzantines مُقيمٌresiding
هُوَ في الرومِ مُقيمٌ
وَلَهُand he has فيin الشامِal-Sham (the Levant) قَلبُa heart
وَلَهُ في الشامِ قَلبُ
He dwells in the land of the Byzantines,
yet his heart is in al-Sham.
مُستَجِدّاًseeking someone new لَمhas not يُصادِفfound
مُستَجِدّاً لَم يُصادِف
عِوَضاًa replacement مِمَّنfor the one whom يُحِبُّhe loves
عِوَضاً مِمَّن يُحِبُّ
Seeking someone new, he has not found
a replacement for the one he loves.
