إِنّيindeed I مُنِعتُI was prevented مِنَfrom المَسيرِtraveling إِلَيكُمُto you (plural)
وَلَوِand if اِستَطَعتُI could لَكُنتُI would have been أَوَّلَthe first وارِدِone arriving
Indeed, I was prevented from traveling to you.
I am forbidden from traveling to you
And had I been able, I would have been the first to arrive.
And if I were able, I would be the first to arrive
أَخكوI complain وَهَلand can أَخكوI complain جِنايَةَthe wrongdoing of مُنعِمٍa benefactor
غَيظُthe anger العَدُوِّof the enemy بِهِthrough him وَكَبتُand the humiliation الحاسِدِof the envier
I complain—yet can I complain of a benefactor's wrongdoing,
Do I wrong my benefactor if I complain?
Through whom the enemy is enraged and the envier humbled?
To spite my enemy and frustrate the envious
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were عُدَّتيmy armament الَّتيwhich أَسطوI strike بِهاwith it
وَيَديand my hand إِذاwhen اِشتَدَّgrew harsh الزَمانُtime وَساعِديand my arm
You were indeed my armament, with which I struck,
You were my weapon with which I charged
And my hand when times grew harsh, and my arm.
And my hand when times were difficult and an ally
فَرُميتُthen I was struck مِنكَby you بِغَيرِwith other than ماwhat أَمَّلتُهُI hoped for it
وَالمَرءُand a person يَشرَقُchokes بِالزُلالِon clear water البارِدِcold
Then I was struck by you with something other than what I had hoped for,
Yet I was cast from you without what I hoped for
And a man can choke even on cold, clear water.
And man shines with the cool pouring rain
لَكِنأَتَتbut there came دونَinstead of السُرورِjoy مَساءَةًan affliction
وَصَلَتjoined لَهاfor it كَفُّthe palm القَبولِof acceptance بِساعِدِwith an arm
But an affliction came instead of joy;
But sorrow came without any joy
For it, acceptance's palm joined with an arm.
And the palm of acceptance met the forearm
فَصَبَرتُso I endured كَالوَلَدِlike a child التَقِيِّpious لِبَرِّهِout of his filial devotion
أَغضىturned a blind eye عَلىto أَلَمٍpain لِضَربِfrom the beating الوالِدِof the father
So I endured like a pious child who, out of filial devotion,
So I was patient like a pious son to his duty
Overlooked the pain of his father's blows.
Bearing pain silently for a father's blow
وَنَقَضتُand I broke عَهداًa pledge كَيفَhow ليfor me بِوَفائِهِwith its fulfillment
وَسُقيتُand I was made to drink دونَكَaway from you كَأسَa cup هَمٍّof grief صارِدِpiercing
And I broke a pledge—how am I to fulfill it?
And I broke a pact - how could I be faithful?
And, away from you, I was made to drink a cup of piercing grief.
And I was made to drink apart from you a bitter cup of sorrow
