أَحِلُّI settle بِالأَرضِin the land يَخشىfear الناسُpeople جانِبَهاits reaches
وَلاand not أُسائِلُI ask أَنّىwhere يَسرَحُroam المالُthe livestock
I settle in a land whose reaches people fear,
I roam the land, people fear my presence,
And I do not ask where the livestock roam.
Yet I care not how freely the cattle graze.
فَهَيبَتيfor the awe I inspire فيin طِرادِthe clash of الخَيلِthe cavalry واقِعَةٌis felt
وَالناسُand the people فَوضىin disarray وَمالُand the livestock of الحَيِّthe tribe إِهمالُuntended
For the awe I inspire is felt in the clash of cavalry,
My awe lies in the charging of the horses,
While people are in disarray and the tribe's livestock untended.
While people are chaos, and the herd is neglected.
كَذاكَthus نَحنُwe إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) أَزمَةٌa crisis طَرَقَتstrikes
حَيٌّa tribe بِحَيثُin a place where يَخافُfear الناسُpeople حَلّالُever encamping
Such are we whenever a crisis strikes:
Thus are we, when crisis befalls,
A tribe that camps where people are afraid.
The living one where people fear the resolver.
