His tears refused to do anything but pour forth,

and the fire of his passion anything but blaze.

The ruined dwellings have a claim upon me: that I never

let their cloud of tears miss a day's rain.

I did not fall short in questioning a dwelling,

but I asked, and it gave no answer.

I saw gray hair appear and said, "Welcome!"

and bade farewell to waywardness and youth.

I did not turn gray from old age, but

saw from my beloveds what turned me gray.

They sent me a caravan of cares,

and made estrangement the mounts that carried them.

Have you not seen us, the strongest protectors of neighbors among men,

with the richest pastures and the most impregnable domain?

    حَلَلنا النَجدَ مِنهُ وَالهِضابا

    Ours is the mountain overlooking Nizar;

we settled its uplands and plateaus.

    وَنوصَفُ بِالجَميلِ وَلا نُحابى

    Mankind ranks us above others, making no exceptions;

we are praised for noble deeds, without favoritism.

    Rabi'ah knows—indeed, Nizar knows—

that we are the head, and other people the tail.

When the fools of Ka'b overstepped their bounds,

we opened a gate of war between us.

We granted them wealth, except that

when they acted unjustly, we granted them spears.

When Sayf al-Din rose, we rose,

as when you rouse wrathful lions.

We were his spearheads when he faced spear-thrusts,

his keen swords when he faced sword-blows.

He called us while the spearheads were leveled,

and at his call, we were the answer.

    وَغَرسٌ طابَ غارِسُهُ فَطابا

    Protégés whose patron excelled, and so they excelled;

and a planting whose planter was good, and so it thrived.

We were like arrows: when they struck

their targets, their archer had struck true.

They crossed Ma'an with us toward al-Jibar,

    and skirted al-Subayrah and al-Qibab.

They passed al-Badiyyah, parched with thirst,

watching the mirage—yet there was no mirage.

They passed through Masih while the night was still a child,

and reached Salamiyah when it had turned gray.

Nadi ibn Ja'far led, from 'Uqayl,

tribal hosts with which he made the ravines overflow.

They perceived them only as companies of troops,

roaring tumultuously just before the charge.

They competed to seize praise through endurance on a day

when souls were seized as plunder.

They called to one another, and from every mountain pass sprang forth

fleet steeds, expressly selected for us.

Their men were nothing to us but captives,

and their steeds nothing to us but booty.

It was as though Nadi ibn Ja'far had led from among them

gifts for which he sought no recompense.

They bolstered their counsel with Banu Quray',

but they failed—may they have no father!—and their counsel failed too.

We drove them on toward al-Hiran,

as we drive unruly camel herds.

With our spears, we made Banu Qushayr drink,

in the valley of al-'Uthayr, dissolved poison.

When the battle grew fierce, we were

stronger in claw and sharper in fang,

more impregnable in flank and stronger in protecting neighbors,

more faithful to covenants and less open to blame.

We skirted al-Furuqlus, not stopping there for water,

as though we had an aversion to water.

They showered foreheads from a heavy cloud,

but their rain was bitter sap, delivered by bitter spear-thrusts.

    They crossed al-Sahsahan, striding briskly,

and carried us across the wilderness, skirting it.

They turned aside from al-Ghuwayr and traveled until

they reached Tadmur's springs and wells.

At al-Samawah, we made 'Uqayl a feast for

the beasts of the earth and the famished birds.

    Through al-Sabbah—and al-Sabbah is a slave—

we killed the very best of their best.

We left in the houses of Banu al-Muhanna

    mourning women sobbing bitterly there.

There Banu Bakr assuaged their grudges,

and left al-Dabab there nothing but mist.

We banished Ka'b for their evil conduct,

and brought Kilab close for their obedience.

We scattered Tayy toward the Golan,

and kept Jinab away from their Samawah.

A cloud that did not settle over 'Uqayl,

and dragged flies across their neighborhood.

We turned with our horses toward Numayr,

as they strained against us at their reins.

With every fearless warrior, generous with his life,

whose loss would weigh heavily on his clan.

His paths were not constricted; rather,

out of pride, he fears becoming afraid.

He commands us, and we deal with his enemies for him:

a noble champion who, if he wished, could suffice and take our place.

When they became certain there was no help,

they called on him for rescue, and he answered.

He returned to kindness toward them, and they returned,

having stretched out their necks to his sharp sword.

He brought both fear and safety upon them,

making them taste through it honey and bitter sap.

He settled them in al-Jazirah after despair,

a man of forbearance when he held the power to punish.

Their dwellings we wrested away by force,

and their land we seized outright.

Had we wished, we would have barred it to the desert tribes,

as lions of the forest defend a forest.

    When princes mobilize an army

against their enemies, we dispatch a letter.

I am the son of those who struck heads long ago,

    when defenders shrank from sword-blows.

Did you not know—and one like you speaks truth—

that I was their brightest shooting star?
