Do you two know of a gentle companion for me,

sincere in affection, or a true friend?

May God not favor, O my two dear friends, an age

whose vicissitudes utterly tore us apart.

I was patron to you both, and I was nothing but

a benevolent father and a compassionate uncle.

So remember me—and how can you two not remember me—

whenever a friend suspects another friend of treachery?

I spent the night weeping for you both—and strange indeed it is

that the captive should spend the night weeping for the free man.
