أَتَزعَمُdo you claim ياضَخمَO you with massive اللَغاديدِjowls أَنَّناthat we
وَنَحنُand we أُسودُlions الحَربِof war لانَعرِفُwe do not know الحَرباwar
Do you claim, O great-jowled man, that we,
Though we are lions of war, do not know war?
فَوَيلَكَso woe to you مَنwho لِلحَربِfor war إِنif لَمnot نَكُنwe are لَهاfor it
وَمَنand who ذاis the one الَّذيwho يُمسيspends the evening وَيُضحيand spends the morning لَهاto it تِرباa companion
So woe to you! Who is for war if we are not?
And who is its companion, evening and morning?
وَمَنand who ذاis it يَلُفُّenvelops الجَيشَthe army مِنfrom جَنَباتِهِits flanks
وَمَنand who ذاis it يَقودُleads الشُمَّthe proud warriors أَوor يَصدُمُcharges القَلباthe army's center
And who envelops the army from its flanks?
And who leads the proud warriors or charges the center?
وَوَيلَكَand woe to you مَنwho أَدىbrought down أَخاكَyour brother بِمَرعَشٍat Marash
وَجَلَّلَand covered ضَرباًwith blows وَجهَthe face والِدِكَof your father العَضباthe keen blade
And woe to you! Who felled your brother at Marash
And covered your father's face with blows of the keen blade?
وَوَيلَكَand woe to you مَنwho خَلّىleft اِبنَthe son أُختِكَof your sister موثِقاًbound
وَخَلّاكَand left you بِاللَقّانِat al-Laqqan تَبتَدِرُracing toward الشَعباthe mountain pass
And woe to you! Who left your sister's son bound,
And left you at al-Laqqan racing for the mountain pass?
أَتوعِدُناdo you threaten us بِالحَربِwith war حَتّىto the point that كَأَنَّناas though we

Do you threaten us with war, as though we
And you had never had our hearts bound fast by it?
لَقَدindeed جَمَعَتناbrought us together الحَربُwar مِنfrom قَبلِbefore هَذِهِthis
فَكُنّاso we were بِهاin it أُسداًlions وَكُنتَand you were بِهاin it كَلباa dog
War has indeed brought us together before this:
Then we were lions in it, while you were a dog.

And ask your proud chiefs, the house of al-Malayin: we
Utterly plundered their glory with the bright blades of India.

And ask the Romans and the Arabs about al-Munastaryatis.

Did our swords not annihilate them, killing and taking captive,
And the sated lions of al-Shara, though they froze in terror?
بِأَقلامِناby our pens أُجحِرتَyou were driven into a burrow أَمor بِسُيوفِناby our swords

Were you driven to your burrow by our pens, or by our swords?
And did we lead lions of al-Shara against you, or books?

We left you roaming the heart of the wilderness,
Like a jerboa entering its burrow, veiling its face with dust.

You boast against us of spear-thrusts and sword-blows in battle;
Your soul has fed you lies aplenty, you son of her arse!
رَعىmay preserve اللَهُGod أَوفاناthe most faithful of us إِذاwhen قالَhe speaks ذِمَّةًto a pledge

May God guard the one of us truest to a pledge when he gives it,
And most piercing in his thrusts, and firmest of heart.
وَجَدتُI found أَباكَyour father العِلجَthe barbarian لَمّاwhen خَبَرتُهُI tested him
أَقَلُّكُمُthe least of you خَيراًin goodness وَأَكثَرَكُمand the most of you عُجباin conceit
I found your father, that barbarian, when I put him to the test,
The least of you in goodness, and the greatest in conceit.
