أَيَحلوdoes it taste sweet? لِمَنto one whom لاno صَبرَpatience يُنجِدُهُaids him صَبرُbitter aloes

Can bitter aloes taste sweet to one whom no patience aids?
Is patience of use to one whom patience aids not,
Whenever one thought passes, another thought assails him.
When care on care weighs heavy on his thought?
أَمُمعِنَةًO woman persisting فيin العَذلِreproach رِفقاًbe gentle بِقَلبِهِwith his heart
أَيَحمِلُcan it bear? ذاthis قَلبٌa heart وَلوeven if أَنَّهُit were صَخرُrock
O woman relentless in reproach, be gentle with his heart!
Or gentleness, when the fair dealings of the loved one
Can a heart bear this, even if it is rock?
Only torment a heart, be it e'en rock?
عَذيريmy defender مِنَagainst اللائيthe women who يَلُمنَblame عَلىfor اَلهَوىlove

Who will defend me against the women who blame me for love?
My excuse for loving, to the blamers, is
Would love not offer an excuse, had they tasted love's savor?
Did they but taste the sweetness of love, they would excuse.
أَطَلنَthey prolonged عَلَيهِagainst him اللَومَreproach حَتّىuntil تَرَكنَهُthey left him

They prolonged their reproach of him until they left him
They blamed and chided till he left me quite,
With his hour a month, and his night an age.
His visit once a month, his night a year.
وَمِنكِرَةٌand a woman finding strange ماعايَنَتwhat she saw مِنof شُحوبِهِhis pallor

وَلاand no عَجَبٌwonder ماwhat عايَنَتهُshe saw of it وَلاand no نُكرُstrangeness
And a woman finds strange the pallor she has seen in him;
Yet no marvel she wonders, that ignorant one,
Yet what she saw is no wonder, nor anything strange.
Having never witnessed my pallor and decay.
وَيُحمَدُand is praised فيin العَضبِthe keen sword البِلىwear وَهوَwhile it قاطِعٌcuts

And wear is praised in the keen blade while it cuts,
In steeds well-omened glory is approved,
And leanness becomes well-marked horses.
As gloom in lions with filed teeth.
وَقائِلَةٍand a woman saying ماذاwhat دَهاكَbefell you تَعَجُّباًin wonder

And a woman asked in wonder, 'What has befallen you?'
A questioner asked, in wonderment,
So I told her, 'You, woman, and Time.'
“What has undone thee?” I answered her,
أَبِالبَينِis it from parting? أَمor بِالهَجرِfrom estrangement أَمor بِكِلَيهِماfrom both of them

'Is it from parting, from estrangement, or from both?'
“Good lady, ‘twas the far one or the break, or both together,
Parting and estrangement shared in what grieved me.
For separation and estrangement have undone me.”

A beloved upon its soil reminds me of Najd.
A friend recalls dear native scenes, and asks
O my two confidants, does remembrance help?
If memory avails at all, companion mine!
تَطاوَلَتِhave grown tall الكُثبانُthe dunes بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand him

وَباعَدَand has set far apart فيماin what lies بَينَناbetween us البَلَدُthe land القَفرُbarren
The dunes have grown tall between me and him,
Between us and the spot the rolling sands lie vast,
And the barren land has set us far apart.
And barren is the desert breadth between.
مَفاوِزُdesert wastes لاnot يُعجِزنَthwart صاحِبَa person of هِمَّةٍresolve

Wastes that cannot thwart a man of resolve,
These trackless wilds no faint of purpose daunts,
Even if the enduring Ghurayri camels cannot cross them.
Though the way-wise they baffle, and the patient’s strength outpaces.
كَأَنَّas though سَفيناًships بَينَbetween فَيدٍFayd وَحاجِزٍand Hajiz

As though ships between Fayd and Hajiz
Like ship between opposing rocks beset,
Were ringed by a sea of mirage from its flatlands.
Girdled by angry seas on every side.

The repulse of foes at a watering place kept me from him—
From his wonted meadows foes have turned my friend aside,
Where hostile looks at those who come to drink abound.
While for his hill-resort longs many an ardent gaze.
وَسُمرُand dark-skinned أَعادٍfoes تَلمَعُgleam البيضُbright swords بَينَهُمamong them

And dark-skinned foes, bright swords gleaming among them,
Black men and white from handy quivers speed
And fair-skinned foes with brown spears in their palms,
Their arrows, while their bow-hands grasp are brown or fair.

And a people—whenever I meet them, the spears drink their fill,
A folk whom, if the spy has reached their camp,
And a land—whenever I raid it, the vulture eats its fill,
Satiety ne’er visited, nor eagles sated are.
وَخَيلٌand horses يَلوحُgleams الخَيرُgood fortune بَينَbetween عُيونِهاtheir eyes

And horses, good fortune gleaming between their eyes,
A land whose every breach let warriors fill,
And a blade—whenever I draw it, victory descends.
There shall the fortune of the war be overthrown.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الفَتىthe young man أَذكىkindles مُغاوَرَةَraiding العِدىthe foes

فَكُلُّthen every بِلادٍland حَلَّhe enters ساحَتَهاits grounds ثَغرُa frontier
When a young man fans the fire of raids against his foes,
A day as though the earth for horror quaked,
Then every land whose grounds he enters is a frontier.
I pierced their squadrons’ serried rank and firm.
وَيَومٍand a day كَأَنَّas though الأَرضَthe earth شابَتgrew gray لِهَولِهِfrom its terror

And a day when the earth seemed to turn gray from its terror,
It marches like the spreading of the rain-flood o’er
I crossed with horses whose riders were filled with fortitude.
The plain, its footsteps on their skirts blood-red.
تَسيرُthey move عَلىover مِثلِsomething like المُلاءِcloths مُنَشَّراًspread out

They move over what is like cloth spread out,
Weeping I escort him, tears of sorrow rain
And their tracks are red embroidery along its edges.
In showers down my cheek, in torrents from my breast.
أُشَيِّعُهُI escort him وَالدَمعُwhile tears مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الأَسىgrief

I escort him, and tears, from the intensity of grief,
I turned, my heart cleft through for his bereavement,
Are strung upon his cheek and scattered on his breast.
And towards his howdah many a wistful glance I threw.
وَعُدتُand I returned وَقَلبيwhile my heart فيwithin سِجافِthe curtains of غَبيطَهُhis camel litter

And I returned, my heart in the curtains of his litter,
Among the Hajj some bright-faced maidens mov’d,
And I cast many glances back toward his howdah.
Screened only by their own majestic mien.
وَفيمَنand among those whom حَوىencompassed ذاكَthat الحَجيجُpilgrim throng خَريدَةٌa bashful maiden

And among those gathered in that pilgrim throng was a bashful maiden,
A palm-spray in whose clasp none like her is held,
Whose modesty forms a veil besides the curtain's fold.
A tent-dweller of whom no like tent-dwellers know.
وَفيand within الكُمِّthe sleeve كَفٌّa hand لاnot يَراهاhe sees it عَديلُهاher fellow rider

And in the sleeve is a hand her fellow rider does not see,
Know they the knavery of the feast these ruins hid?
And in the bower, a face the bower itself does not know.
Felt they the thrill these barren wastes have known?
فَهَلso does عَرَفاتٌArafat عارِفاتٌknow بِزَورِهاof its visitors

Does Arafat, then, recognize its visitors?
Became Meccah’s valley-side once green again?
And have those sacred sites and al-Hijr become aware?
Once more the stony tract brought forth the bitter weed?
أَماhas not? اِخضَرَّturned green مِنof بُطنانِthe hollows of مَكَّةَMecca ماذَوىwhat has withered

Has not what withered in Mecca's hollows turned green?
May God water a people amidst whom thy camp was pitched
Has not the valley grown grassy? Has not the rock sprouted?
With clouds in hosts foregathered, no mere sprinkling showers!
سَقىmay water اللَهُGod قَوماًa people حَلَّcame to rest رَحلُكَyour saddle فيهِمُamong them

May God water the people among whom your saddle has come to rest,
With clouds whose bounty is neither scant nor meager.
