أَلاah مَنwho مُبلِغٌwill tell سَرَواتِchieftains قَوميmy people
وَسَيفَand the Sword الدَولَةِof the State المَلِكِthe king الهُماماthe valiant
Ah, who will tell the chieftains of my people
And Sayf al-Dawla, the valiant king,
بِأَنّيthat I لَمdid not أَدَعI leave فَتَياتِmaidens قَوميmy people
إِذاwhen حَدَّثنَthey spoke جَمجَمنَthey mumbled الكَلاماthe words
That I did not leave the maidens of my people
To mumble their words when they spoke?
شَرَيتُI bought ثَنائَهُنَّtheir praise بِبَذلِby offering نَفسيmy life
وَنارُwhile the fire الحَربِof war تَضطَرِمُblazes اِضطِراماfiercely
I bought their praise by offering up my life,
While the fire of war blazed fiercely.
وَلَمّاand when لَمnot أَجِدI found إِلّاexcept فِراراًflight
أَشَدَّworse مِنَthan المَنِيَّةِdeath أَوor حِماماdeath
And when I found nothing but flight—
Worse than death—or death itself,
حَمَلتُI compelled عَلىto وُرودِencountering المَوتِdeath نَفسيmyself
وَقُلتُand I said لِعُصبَتيto my band موتواdie كِراماnobly
I drove myself to meet death,
And told my comrades, 'Die nobly!'
وَعُذتُand I sought refuge بِصارِمٍin a keen sword وَيَدٍand a hand وَقَلبٍand a heart
حَمانيprotected me أَنthat أُلامَI be blamed وَأَنand that أُضاماI be wronged
I sought refuge in a keen sword, a hand, and a heart
That protected me from being blamed or wronged.
وَلَمand did not أَبذُلI offer لِخَوفِهِمُfor fear of them مَجَنّاًa shield
وَلَمand did not أَلبَسI wear حِذارَfor fear of المَوتِdeath لاماarmor
I did not put forward a shield for fear of them,
Nor did I don armor for fear of death.
كَشَفتُI drove away بِهِwith it صُدورَthe breasts of الخَيلِthe horses عَنّيfrom me
كَماas جَفَّلتَyou scattered فيin بيدٍdesert wastes نَعاماostriches
With it I drove the horses' breasts away from me,
As you scatter ostriches in desert wastes.
أَلُفُّهُمُI gather them وَأَنشُرُهُمand scatter them كَأَنّيas though I
أُطَرِّدُI drive مِنهُمُfrom among them الإِبلَthe camels السَواماfree-grazing
I gather them and scatter them, as though
I were driving grazing camels from their midst.
وَأَنتَقِدُand I select الفَوارِسَthe horsemen بيدَbut أَنّيthat I
رَأَيتُI deemed اللَومَdisgrace أَنto أَلقىI face اللِئاماthe ignoble
And I single out the horsemen, but
I deemed it shameful to face the ignoble.
وَمَدعُوٍّand many a summoned man إِلَيَّto me أَجابَanswered لَمّاwhen
رَأىhe thought أَنthat قَدalready تَذَمَّمَhe secured protection وَاِستَلاماand donned armor
And many a man summoned to face me answered when
He thought himself protected and clad in armor.
عَقَدتُI clasped عَلىaround مُقَلَّدِهِhis neck يَمينيmy right hand
وَأَعفَيتُand I spared المُثَقَّفَthe straightened spear وَالحُساماand the keen sword
I clasped my right hand around his neck,
And spared the straightened spear and the keen sword.
وَهَلand is there عُذرٌan excuse وَسَيفُwhile the Sword الدينِof the Faith رُكنيmy pillar
إِذاif لَمnot أَركَبِI undertake الخُطَطَthe ventures العِظاماgreat
And have I any excuse, with Sayf al-Din my pillar,
If I do not undertake mighty ventures?
وَأَتبَعُand I follow فِعلَهُhis conduct فيin كُلِّevery أَمرٍmatter
وَأَجعَلُand I make فَضلَهُhis excellence أَبداًalways إِماماa guide
And I follow his deeds in every matter,
And always make his excellence my guide.
وَقَدand indeed أَصبَحتُI have become مُنتَسِباًclaiming kinship إِلَيهِwith him
وَحَسبيand it suffices me أَنthat أَكونَI be لَهُto him غُلاماa servant
And I now claim kinship with him,
And it suffices me to be his servant.
أَرانيhe showed me كَيفَhow أَكتَسِبُI attain المَعاليhigh honors
وَأَعطانيand he gave me عَلىagainst الدَهرِTime الذِماماa pledge of protection
He showed me how to attain high honors,
And granted me a pledge of protection against Time.
وَرَبّانيand he nurtured me فَفُقتُso I surpassed بِهِthrough him البَراياhumankind
وَأَنشَأَنيand he raised me فَسُدتُso I became lord بِهِthrough him الأَناماhumankind
And he nurtured me, so through him I surpassed humankind,
And raised me, so through him I became lord of mankind.
فَعَمَّرَهُso may He prolong his life الإِلَهُGod لَناfor us طَويلاًlong
وَزادَand may increase اللَهُGod نِعمَتَهُhis blessing دَواماin duration
So may God grant him long life for us,
And may God make his blessing endure ever longer.
