A greeting, sent at evening and at dawn,

    to the woman dwelling in the valley;

to her whose love is my guide

whenever I visit, and my camel-driver.

I love desert life for the sake

    of a black-haired, desert-dwelling gazelle.

    Ah, lady of the jewels

    on shoulder and neck,

you have indeed delighted my enemies

    and made my enviers gloat,

with a sickness that has no healer

    and captivity with no ransomer.

So, my brothers and my drinking companions,

and my reproachers and my sickbed visitors—

    for I never cease remembering

    you, in sleep and sleeplessness,

    with longing for you, familiar,

    and a dream-vision, unfamiliar.

    Ah, visitor to Mosul,

    greet that gathering.

For in Mosul are my brothers,

and in Mosul are my supporting arms.

So tell the people to come to

    me, in pairs and singly.

For with me is abundance for visitors,

and with me, drink to slake water-seekers' thirst.

And with me is shade outspread

    over townsman and desert-dweller.

    Ah, let no weakness hold

you back from the thirsty one's watering place.

    For pilgrimage is obligatory

when a she-camel and provisions are at hand.

    I was spared Time's onslaught

by a generous man, descended from generous men.

The best of fathers begot him,

themselves sprung from the best of forefathers.

So he yearns for no land

    but mine—and for my visitors.

May God protect him for as long as he

lives, from the evil of ravaging Time.
