    فما كانَ أحلى مُقلتيكِ وفاكِ

    You wept for one who wept, and lamented to one who lamented;

how sweet were your eyes and your mouth!

You heard my song to beauty and to love,

and answered this heart when it called to you.

You are like almond blossom smiling at the light,

and my tears and lovers' tears are your dew.

My soul indeed shaded your face when

you scattered the roses of your face upon your peers.

Among women of beauty you were a queen,

and among the kindly, like an angel.

It is glory enough for you that I am your lover,

and a man like me loves none but you.

Yours is the honor, fair one; you are fortunate,

for my heart has succumbed to love of you.

Had you not possessed the brightest star,

your breast would not have stirred what lies in mine.

So do not disown a heart and a hand, both of which

kept faith with you despite your foes and protected you.

By your life, have you told your mother of a youth

who came to you astride a neighing, white-blazed steed,

racing the finest horses over the sand, outstripping them,

and recognizing the light of your tent beneath the night?

Nothing distressed me but my infatuation with a songstress

who tries to recount what I recount.

So I told her, “Go; there is no peace between us.

My heart has sobered from its drunkenness and now loathes you.”

Do my poems make women of noble birth weep,

while you laugh at a sufferer's anguish?

And in the land's east and west shine

my stars, though the clouds of your sky conceal them.

Were it not for my delusion, you would not have won a glance

or a smile from me to light your darkness.

My soul has healed and returned to the right path,

and from the soul's healing comes your misery.

I hated you, for without you I would not have spent the night despairing,

as though I were a captive who had won no release.

That was a weakness through which I squandered my worth,

and became stunned, without a movement.

Yes, my heart strayed in love for her, but

I found solace when your radiance guided it.

    فعودي إلى صدرٍ شفاهُ نداك

    Queen of my heart, you are a rib I lost;

return, then, to a breast your dew has healed.

Your hands upon the strings revive me,

as your feet made the sanctuary's garden bloom.

    فلو سالَ وجداً ما خَلا وسلاك

    Blessings upon you: with a melody you have consoled my heart;

even if it melted with longing, it would not be emptied of you or forget you.

Sing again, sing again for me a soothing song,

for my soul finds rest in your singing.

The echo of your ringing voice resounded within my ribs,

and poetry comes only from the resonance of your echo.

By the first rendezvous and the first kiss,

and the first night when your sleep took flight,

while my ambitions raged like scorching winds,

and your hopes shone like stars,

stand and bid me farewell beneath a vine's branches,

its clusters glittering like your jewels.

How many tears beneath it, and how much dew upon it,

both dried by the morning sun and your dusky lips.

Be tender with me a moment; bid me farewell, and place

gardens within my heart, and grant me your fruit.

Jasmine's fragrance has spread from me; breathe forth

the fragrance of roses, that my scent may meet yours.

O my rose, in roses and jasmine there is something

that lends my winter some of your youth's spring.

Your face greeted me upon every flower,

and in every breeze bearing your east wind's scent.

Like a rooster greeting the sun, I greeted a smile

with which your lips light the night of separation.

How often I cried out like a rooster, rousing my nation,

and raising sunlight above your hills.

Let me depart in haste, for my brothers

have become either mourned or mourning.

How many an exile is lost among strangers,

and how many a mourner amid the ruins has saddened you.

I give my life freely for my people, for I

am accustomed, like a soldier, to plunging into battle.

How welcome their deliverance after suffering,

even if in that deliverance lay my death.

If there is no wound in the body, within the breast are

wounds by which your young man's brow is held high.

I am Arab in origin, speech, and love,

so my love for Layla and the dwellings is pure.

When an Arab, white of hand, visits us,

I tell her, “Greet my brother and yours.”
