جرَّدتِyou unsheathed منfrom تلكَthose الجفونِthe eyelids سُيوفاswords
وحَشدتِand you mustered منfrom جيشِthe army الجمالِof beauty صُفوفاranks
You unsheathed swords from those eyelids,
You wielded swords from those eyelids,
and mustered ranks from beauty's army.
And arrayed regiments from the army of beauty.
فتساقطَso they fell العشَّاقُthe lovers صَرعىslain فيin الوَغىthe fray
أوand (questioning) ماnot اشتَفَيتِyou satisfied yourself وقدand already قتَلتِyou killed ألوفاthousands
So lovers fell slain in the fray—
So the lovers fell slain in the fray—
and have you not had your fill, having already killed thousands?
How many you killed, when you quenched their thirst!
إنيindeed I لأعجَبُsurely marvel للجمالِat beauty وفِعلِهِand its workings
منهُfrom it الحياةُlife وقدand perhaps يكونُit is حُتوفاdeaths
Truly, I marvel at beauty and its workings:
I wonder at Beauty and its deeds;
from it comes life, yet it may also be death.
From it comes life, though it may be deadly.
ولقدand indeed أقولُI say وراحتايَand my two palms علىupon الحَشىthe breast
رِفقاًbe gentle بقلبٍwith a heart لاnot يزالُceases to be ضَعيفاweak
And indeed I say, both my palms upon my breast:
And I say, my heart sore on its pyre,
Be gentle with a heart that remains weak.
“Gently, with a heart still so frail!
باللهِfor God's sake إنif تُعطيyou grant الأمانَsafety لعاشقٍto a lover
لاdo not تُسمِعيهِlet him hear منfrom الحريرِsilk حَفيفاa rustling
For God's sake, if you grant a lover safety,
For God’s sake, if you give a lover safety,
do not let him hear the rustle of silk.
Do not let him hear the rustling of silk.”
هذاthis الفؤادُheart إذاif رَفعتِyou lift شغَافهُits covering
أبصرتِyou see فيهِwithin it منof الجمالِbeauty صُنوفاvarieties
This heart—if you lift its covering,
If you lifted the veil from this heart,
you will see within it many forms of beauty,
You would see in it Beauty’s kinds unnumbered.

and read verses of revelation that were not
And you would read verses of revelation
written—the heartbeat became their letters.
That were never written, their letters hearts throbbing.
أماas for جمالُكِyour beauty فهوthen it is نارٌa fire طهَّرتpurged
دَنسَthe taint القلوبِof hearts لذاكَfor that reason صرتُI became عفيفاchaste
As for your beauty, it is a fire that purged
Your beauty is a fire that purged
the taint of hearts; thus I became chaste.
The blemish of hearts—so I turned chaste.

So, by a full cheek and a languid eyelid,
With a supple cheek, an eyelid withering,
and a mouth that spread a delicate fragrance,
A kissing-mouth spreading sweet basil,
وبخصرِكand by your waist الفانيvanishing وصَبريand my patience المُنقضيspent
لاdo not تمنعيdeny منfrom قُبلتَينِtwo kisses ظريفاa gallant man
and by your vanishing waist and my spent patience,
With your vanishing waist and my shattered composure—
do not deny a gallant man two kisses.
Do not forbid me two playful kisses!
وخُذيand take لقلبكِfor your heart منfrom قوامكِyour figure رقةًtenderness
وصِليand grant union فربُّكfor your Lord يحفظُremembers المعروفاkindness
And take some tenderness for your heart from your figure,
Take for your heart from your shapely figure tenderness,
and grant me union, for your Lord remembers kindness.
And be devoted. Your Lord preserves what is known.
