You mocked a soul whose qualities you do not know.

Why did you not see your shortcomings and her perfection?

And you said, whispering your words in the dark:

Come, let us curb her pride and swagger.

My soul is like a thunderbolt, so fear her downward rush,

And say in despair: how hard she is to attain!

How many a wish have I won through death,

And how many a lofty summit my resolve has bowed!

Did her fire not scorch you, even as her light

Guided you, so you came to extol her deeds?

For she is nothing but an Arabian filly,

Snapping her hobbles on the racecourse of steeds.

    وقد عَشِقَت بعدَ الجروحِ نبالها

    Her blood ran as fire, so she yearned for battle;

And even after her wounds, she loved battle's arrows.

Even if she falls slain among the spears,

Then that is a death that grants her what she wished.

She yearns for fertile pasture and a grazing ground

Spacious, and at evening she longs for her sands.

How many neighs in the distance rouse me,

And how many glances whose blaze I cherish!

And a coy beauty met me with a smile,

But I met her coquetry with a frowning face.

    فليتَ لحظِّي في الجهادِ كما لها

    Hers are lightning's smiles in the night of my ordeal;

If only my fortune in struggle had smiles like hers,

So I might win love and wealth from my world,

And possess, for a time, her wealth and beauty.

She asks me about my pallor, so I answer her:

My sorrow has stripped this face of its freshness.

Upon my brow is the touch of wisdom, which

Sets her men apart by paling their brows.

If you say, 'Leave her, and delight in our union,'

I say, 'Leave me; I have worshipped her majesty.'

Gently, fair one! Our souls do not

Love anything in bodies but their blades.

    فما رَضيت نفسي الكبيرةُ حالها

    They were created great, for sorrow and ambition;

So my great soul was not content with her lot.

Nor does wealth benefit an impoverished soul,

Nor does a rich soul hoard her wealth.

    وكم حلَّ همٌّ مهجةً فأسالها

    For my soul is to my body as flame is to a candle;

And how many a sorrow has lodged in a heart and melted it!

Is there hope of rest for one who journeys, while glory

Beckons to him and he seeks her bounty?

And I am generous indeed toward glory and passion

With my soul, and death's specter has not daunted her.

God be with you! How many a chaste soul has suffered

At the sight of evils she cannot bear.

Hers are the leaps of light before it goes out,

And time refuses to let her knot unravel.

If the lapses of the great are great,

Then greater than these is one who forgives and overlooks them.

And no garden whose blossoms have opened,

And whose sand and clear water light has silvered,

And whose rills have sung the poems of our love,

To entrust the lovers' lament to its shade,

Is lovelier than a face whose soul flutters

Above it, and casts her image into the eyes.

By your life, has a beloved's dwelling stirred your longing—

Where you breathed her fragrance and attained union with her—

So that the memory of bliss made you weep in your affliction,

As you see it come and go like a dream?

How deadly remembrance is in a lover's soul,

That attempts the hardest of all tasks!

If you ask lovers about their tears,

They will show you their flow down pallid faces.
