بَرزتِyou appeared لناto us منfrom القَصرِthe palace العليّlofty
كماjust as طلعَrose الهلالُthe crescent moon منfrom العشيّtwilight
You appeared to us from the lofty palace,
You emerged from the lofty palace
as the crescent moon rose out of twilight.
Like the crescent moon rising at dusk
فهلso, is there للعاشقِfor the lover العانيcaptive وصولٌaccess
إليكِto you وأنتwhile you are فيin الفَلكِthe celestial sphere السنيradiant
So can the captive lover find a way
Can a longing lover ever reach you
to you, while you are in the radiant celestial sphere?
While you are in the highest sphere?
جَنَيتُI plucked الوردَthe roses منfrom خدَّيكِyour two cheeks لماwhen
رَنوتُI gazed إِلىat محيّاكِyour face الحييbashful
I plucked the roses from your cheeks when
I plucked roses from your cheeks when
I gazed at your bashful face.
I glanced at your bashful face
وماand not لمستtouched يَديmy hand وفميand my mouth ولكنbut
جناهُits gathering كانwas بالنَّظرِby looking الخفيfurtive
And neither my hand nor my mouth touched them; rather,
My hand and lips never touched them
they were gathered with a furtive glance.
Yet I picked them with a furtive gaze
لئنeven if حَجَّبتِyou veil عنfrom عَينيّmy two eyes حُسناًbeauty
فروحيthen my soul منكِfrom you فيin ريّاًfragrance وريand refreshment
Even if you hide beauty from my eyes,
If you've veiled your beauty from my eyes
my soul still finds fragrance and refreshment in you.
My soul still scents it from afar
وإنand if تُرخيyou lower النِّقابthe veil عليهover it جاءتcomes
إِليَّto me الرِّيحُthe breeze بالأرجِwith fragrance الشهيdelightful
And if you lower the veil over it, there comes
And if you lift the veil from it
to me the breeze bearing delightful fragrance.
The breeze brings me its sweet fragrance
أطلّيlook out منfrom علىatop شرفٍa height وطلّيand shed with impunity
دميmy blood فالموتُfor death يعذبُis sweet للشقيto the wretched
Look out from a height, and spill
Lean out from a balcony, lean out
my blood with impunity, for death is sweet to the wretched.
And let my blood flow, for death tortures the wretched
فإمّاso either أنthat تفيyou remain true to حبّاًa love شريفاًnoble
وإمّاor else أنthat أموتَI die بمشرفيby a Mashrafi sword
So either be true to a noble love,
Either requite a noble love
or let me die by a Mashrafi sword.
Or let me die at my balcony
جمالُكِyour beauty فيهwithin it للنّعمانfor al-Nu'man ملكٌa kingdom
فعذّبنيso torment me بأسرٍwith captivity منfrom عديAdi
In your beauty al-Nu'man holds a kingdom;
Your beauty has power over Nu'man
so torment me with a captivity like Adi's.
So torture me with bonds from Uday
ومنand from عينيكِyour two eyes كسرةُthe rout جيشِthe army of كِسرىKisra
إذاًthen لنwill not تُؤخذيyou be held accountable بدميfor my blood الزكيpure
And from your eyes comes the rout of Kisra's army;
And your eyes break the army of Kisra
then you will not be held accountable for my innocent blood.
Then my pure blood cannot be shed
ألابِسةَO wearer السّوادِblack علىover بياضٍwhiteness
فلقتِyou split open الصبحَthe dawn فيin الليلِthe night الدجيpitch-dark
O wearer of black over white,
Wearing black over whiteness
you made dawn break within the pitch-dark night.
You brought dawn to the dark night
لعمرby the life of أبيكِyour father ماnot شاهدتُI have seen حُسناًbeauty
كهذاlike this فاستُريهِso veil it عنfrom الغويthe wayward one
By your father's life, I have never seen beauty
By your father's life, I've never seen
like this; so veil it from the wayward.
Beauty like this, so hide it from the wanton
جمالُكِyour beauty راعنيawed me فوقفتُso I stood أرنُوI gaze
إليهِat it كَمُشرئبٍّlike one craning his neck للنَّديtoward the generous one
Your beauty awed me, so I stood gazing
Your beauty stirred me, and I stood still
at it, like one craning toward a generous giver.
Yearning toward it like a camel unleashed at dawn
وياand O بشراًmortal بداappeared ملكاًan angel كريماًnoble
هبوطُthe descent الوحيof revelation منهُfrom him علىupon النبيthe Prophet
And O mortal who appeared as a noble angel,
O glad tidings of a generous king appearing
from whom revelation descends upon the Prophet.
Revelation descending upon the Prophet from him
أرىI see أغلىthe most precious الجواهِرthe jewels فيin الثَّناياthe front teeth
أهذاis this الثغرُthe mouth صنعُthe handiwork الجوهريof the jeweler
I see the most precious jewels in your front teeth;
I see the most precious gems in the folds
is this mouth the jeweler's handiwork?
Is this mouth crafted by the jeweler?
ووسوسةُand the whispering الحُلَىof the ornaments خلبتbewitched فؤاديmy heart
فوسواسُso the whispering الفؤادِof the heart منfrom الحُلِيِّthe jewelry
And the whispering of your ornaments bewitched my heart;
The temptation of trinkets distracted my heart
so the heart's whispers come from the jewelry.
A heart's temptation by baubles
ضحكتyou laughed وحولَكand around you العشاقُthe lovers صَرعَىstruck down
فكانَso was الحقُّright عندَكِin your eyes للقويfor the strong
You laughed while lovers lay stricken around you;
You laughed while lovers around you lay slain
so, in your eyes, right belonged to the strong.
So with you, might was right
وباتَand stayed the night الموتُdeath قدّاميbefore me وخَلفيand behind me
لتهطالِbecause of the downpour النّبالِof arrows منfrom القِسيthe bows
And death stayed all night before me and behind me,
Death was before me and behind me
because arrows rained down from the bows.
From the hailing arrows of the relentless
أراميةO archer بنبلِwith the arrows اللحظِof the glance منwho ليfor me
بنزعِby pulling out السّهمِthe arrow منfrom قلبيmy heart الدميِّbloodied
O you who shoot the arrows of a glance, who will help me
An Aramean with the glance's arrows
pull the arrow from my bloodied heart?
Drawn from my bleeding heart
وكيفَand how أردُّI ward off عنfrom صَدريmy breast سِهاماًarrows
تُمزّقtear through لامةَthe armor البطلof the champion الكميfully armed
And how can I ward from my breast arrows
How can I ward off arrows from my chest
that tear through the armor of the fully armed champion?
That shred the meat of a brave warrior?
