Wherever lightning flashed in the gloom

It tore at a heart yearning for ardour

That heart whose feelings were so tender

Still roaming enraptured with the Orient

Pouring itself out and panting but without hope

By God how ugly is greed

How many a bird it had tamed wept for it

How many a stranger turned away and never came back
