إذاwhen نفحتwafts ريحٌa breeze أقولُI say سَلاماpeace
كأنَّas though خيالاًa vision منكِof you زارَvisited لُماماbriefly
When a breeze wafts, I say, 'Peace,'
When a breeze blows, I say peace
As though a vision of you had made a fleeting visit.
As if an image of you has just visited the summit.
فردّيso return سلامَthe greeting الحبِّof love فيin كلِّevery نسمةٍbreeze
وقدand already فاحَwafted fragrantly منهاfrom it فيin الرّياضِthe gardens خُزامىlavender
So return love's greeting in every breeze,
Reply to my love's greeting in every breeze,
While lavender's fragrance wafts from it through the gardens.
As the meadows were filled with its fragrance.
وإنand if لمnot ترُدِّيهِyou return it حياءًout of shyness تبَسَّميsmile
فأرضىthen I am content ولاand not أخشىI fear عليكِfor you ملاماreproach
And if shyness keeps you from returning it, smile,
If you don't reply out of shyness, just smile,
Then I shall be content, and fear no reproach for you.
I'll be content and fear no blame on you.

ومنand from بسمةٍa smile تُحييbrings to life الرجاءَhope رماماcrumbled remains
For my soul finds consolation in a greeting,
For my soul has the excuse of a greeting
And in a smile that brings hope's crumbled remains to life.
And a smile that revives hope in ruins.

Lo, every gentle breeze carrying my greeting
Every breeze with my peace is gentle,
Passes over the abode of bliss as a soft south wind.
Passing by the abode of bliss and blessings.

May God guard a home that held beauty and love,
May God protect the abode that contained beauty and love,
So its remembered days became coolness and peace.
So its morning became cool and peaceful.
تنشَّقتُI inhaled ريّاthe fragrance الوردِof roses منfrom نفَحاتِهاits scented breezes
وراعَيتُand I gazed upon فيهاin it البدرَthe full moon منكِfrom you تماماin its fullness
I inhaled the fragrance of roses from its scented breezes,
The dewdrops of roses burst from its blows,
And there I beheld in you the moon in its fullness.
And in it I saw the full moon that is you.

So I would see in it a sky and a garden,
I saw it as a sky and a heaven,
And it would bring forth a star or split open flower-sheaths.
Rising as a star or parting like a veil.

Your nights are white, their light coming from your face;
Your nights are white with the light of your smile,
So my eye knew no darkness beside you.
So my eyes have never known darkness by you.

Oh, how sweet the dripping of my tears and heart's blood
How wonderful the dripping of my tears and passion
Upon the acacias, lamenting through their doves.
On the wailing nightingales is like pigeons.

Between us is only fragrant conversation
That wafts as perfume or flows as wine,
That smells of perfume or flows like wine.

Reciting poetry that stirs our feelings,
So we weep with tenderness or melt with passionate love.
So we cry tenderly or melt from passion.

And around us the stock flower gives you its color
The scattered blossoms give you their color
And its fragrance, for it found your hands to be clouds.
As the clouds have found your hands.

Your smile contains every color and fragrance
Of flowers, where plucking was forbidden.
Of flowers where plucking was forbidden.

Through your love, you made life dear and adorned it,
With your love, you have made life beautiful and worthy
As a beautiful dream made sleep dear.
As a beautiful dream has made sleep beloved.

And with gentleness, charm, and joy you delighted
You have given a lover joy, charm and delight
A lover who began to quench his burning thirst with them.
So he became, through them, dissolved in love.

I bore a heart flowing with feeling;
I carried a heart full of passion
You heard its heartbeat, which was speech.
And heard from it a speech of longing.

And a soul, songful like the souls of sparrows,
And a soul like the chirping of birds
Rapturous, it loved to dwell in the gardens.
Happily dwelling in the meadows.

You melt with gentleness or shyness, so let fall
Veil yourself in kindness or shyness and lower
A veil, and lower a face veil if you come forth.
A screen if the wraps have been lifted.

I fear for you the eye and the voice, if the eye gazes,
I fear for you the evil eye and voice if it called out,
And if the voice rings while the heart takes flight and circles.
And if it did, the heart burst into flames.

O my lady, you are the honored one
My lady, you are the honored one
With whom all who love beauty are enamored.
For whom every admirer of beauty yearns.

You sat as queen upon the throne of the heart,
You sat on the throne of the heart as queen
So I became ʿIṣām to beauty's Nuʿmān.
So the beauty of Nu'man submitted to you.

Your beauty is worshipped for the glory of its perfection,
Your beauty is worshiped for the honor of its perfection
And I was the leader of beauty's worshippers.
And you were the imam for the worshipers of beauty.

Blessings on you for the beautiful days gone by;
Goodness to you for the beautiful pact of the past
Ah, if only that time had lasted longer and endured.
If only that pact had lasted and remained.
سَمَحتِyou granted بوصلٍwith closeness كانwas منكِfrom you تعلَّةًa consolation
فلمso it did not يَشفcure منيfrom me غلَّةًburning thirst وسقاماand sickness
You granted closeness that was but a consolation from you,
You allowed a connection that was an excuse from you
So it cured neither my burning thirst nor my sickness.
But it did not cure me of sickness and pain.

So you are generous in what pleases the noble,
You are generous in what satisfies the noble,
Though your withholding has angered the ignoble.
Even though stinginess from you would anger the mean.

Who remained true to the pledge and to your kindness.
Who stood by the pact and kindness from you.
