As silk reveals the figures beneath it.
As silk unravels from cocoons

For thunder warns of thunderbolts.

For the wine tavern is a lions' den.

When scattered bubbles float upon her,

For a life or death such as Labid's.

How close life is to vanishing,
Intoxicate me with goblets, I eat resolutely
And how close death is to immortality!
Thus experiencing death's swoop

I will become drunk with a drunkenness from which
With flowers strewn under me and over me
There is no awakening, and enter the twin gardens of houris and graceful women.

Flowers lie scattered beneath me and above me,
The strings with a stirring melody
And my sleep is among cups and an oud.

كترجيعِlike the repetition of النواحِlamentation علىover اللحودgraves

The strings have a plaintive chant,
So Saadi's sitting room or garden tempts me
Like repeated lamentation over graves.
To an era of joy before the loss

My drunkenness then death is best for me
Awakens my longing for a happy time.
For in these two is the solace of the seeker

Leave the hoarding of coins to folly.

And intoxication is not far from them.
So through her is my revival after destruction

He saw in wine safety for the fugitive.

وأبدَتand revealed حمرَهاher reds منfrom تحتِbeneath سودblacks
She cleared smoke from the fire of her cheek
Suspended on sturdy mountains
And revealed her reds from beneath the black.
To fill my mind with light, vitality,
وقالتand she said والوشاحُand the sash علىupon يَدَيهاher two hands
بهذاin this مَصرعُthe downfall of البطلthe hero النجيدvaliant
She said, with the sash across her hands:
And fragrance in a shaded sanctuary
In this lies the valiant hero's downfall.
I emerged finding my hopes in it
فقلتُso I said النارُthe fire شاقتنيenticed me وإنيand I
مجوسيٌّa Magian يُشمِّرُprepares eagerly للسجودto prostrate
I said: the fire has enticed me, and I am
With the splitting dawn, renewing and repeating
A Magian, preparing eagerly to prostrate.
And my riding beast is only a rocking one
أرىI see نهدَيكِyour two breasts معزفةًa musical instrument وعرشاًand a throne
لأكبرِfor one greater منthan هشامٍHisham أوor يزيدYazid
I see your two breasts as an instrument and a throne
Dearer to me than the reserved camel
For one greater than Hisham or Yazid.
How the swaying sedges bent
إذاwhen لمَستهماtouches them both كفِّيmy palm وجسَّتand feels
أُناغيI coo أوor أُغنِّيI sing كالوليدlike al-Walid
When my palm touches and feels them,
And the blowing of its breeze walked steadily
I coo or sing like al-Walid.
In them the winds blew and drank to fullness
بضيقِat the straining of الذَّرعِpatience مِنكِfrom you أضيقُI grow strained ذرعاًin patience
فأَخفيso I conceal ماwhat يوَسوسُwhispers أوor فجوديthen be generous
Your impatience makes my patience wear thin,
Like a nation looking upon delegations
So I conceal what whispers within—or be generous.
So a rustling or burbling delighted me
فلستُfor I am not براجعٍretreating عنهُfrom it وإنيand I
لآخِذُهُwill surely take it منfrom الزَّردِthe chain mail النضيدclose-set
For I will not retreat from it, and I
Of water in the small dunes and hillocks
Will surely take it from the close-set mail.
Sometimes it flowed gurgling and other times
فآدمُfor Adam لمnot يَرعهُfrightened him الموتُdeath لماwhen
جَنىpicked التفَّاحَapples منfrom حمرِthe redness of الخدودcheeks
For Adam did not fear death when
It bubbled from the rock's rigid cavity
He gathered apples from rosy cheeks.
Then twittered a gentle bird
ولماand when احمرَّflushed خدّاهاher two cheeks ولاحتand appeared
علىupon الشّفتَينِthe two lips بيِّنةُthe clear testimony of الشّهودthe witnesses
When her cheeks flushed, and there appeared
Teaching me the art of singing
Upon her lips the witnesses' clear testimony,
And sang a trill captivating my heart
هَصَرتُI bent قوامَهاher figure بذؤابَتيهاby her two tresses
فلامَسَso touched رأسُهاher head حَبلَthe cord of الوريدthe jugular vein
I bent her figure by her two tresses,
As though it composed the lines of poetry
And her head touched my jugular vein.
I said, repeat your singing, oh Meaningful One
وبتُّand I spent the night أقبِّلُkissing المرجانَcoral حتىuntil
رأيتُI saw الدرِّpearls منamong أغلىthe costliest فريدpeerless gems
I spent the night kissing coral until
And I'm not inclined to any other repetition
I saw pearls among the costliest, peerless gems.
Whether it's us, the warbling is a poem
وفاحَand wafted علىover ثناياهاher front teeth شَذاهاher fragrance
وفيand in أنفاسِهاher breaths تحريقُthe burning of عودaloeswood
Her fragrance wafted over her front teeth,
So twitter for the splendid excellent one
And in her breaths was burning aloeswood.
Or else you placed the like of me among a tribe
سَقَتنيshe gave me to drink خمرَتَيthe two wines of كأسٍa cup وثَغرٍand a mouth
وجادَتand she lavished ليon me بتَجويدٍwith fine singing وجيدand a neck
She gave me the two wines of cup and mouth
Whose neighborhood I share but gain no benefit
And lavished on me fine singing and her neck.
My being a neighbor was but captivity
نَعِمتُI delighted بهاin her منعِّمةًsweetening للحنِthe melody
إذاwhen غَنّتshe sang أقولُI say لهاto her أعيديrepeat
I delighted in her as she sweetened the melody;
And my poems like clanking of chains
When she sang, I would tell her: repeat it.
So I stayed free and flew free, for death
كذاthus محبوبةٌMahbuba غَنّتsang وفضلٌand Fadl
لدىbefore متوكِّلٍal-Mutawakkil ولدىand before سعيدSa'id
So sang Mahbuba and Fadl
Is the free one's life between the enslaved
Before al-Mutawakkil and before Sa'id.
The tongue of birds I understand so my soul

مُغرِّدَتينِboth singing للعيشِfor a life الرغيدof ease
His two Jaradas delighted the Hijaz,
Is like souls of birds housed
Both singing for a life of ease.
I complained to you though complaining is solace
ولماand when انشَقَّsplit open صدرُthe breast of الليلِnight حقداًin spite
علىagainst مُتَمَتِّعٍone taking pleasure فيهin it سهيدsleepless
And when the night's breast split with spite
For how slight are affectionate friends from hostile ones
At one awake and taking pleasure within it,
I see you pecking at chicks and pecking
تنشّقتُI breathed in النسيمَthe breeze فنعّشتنيso revived me
نوافحُgusts برَّدتcooled حرّىthe burning heat of الكبودlivers

I breathed in the breeze, and there revived me
Reminding me of every feast and celebration
Gusts that cooled the burning livers.
An olive tree leaned affectionately making a home and nest for you

Morning greeted me like a desired woman
And here is the far loner's invitation
Who gazed and smiled at an affectionate youth.

Hanging upon the defiant mountain,

To fill my soul with light and freshness
And fragrance, in the refuge of cool shade.

I climbed, renewing my hopes upon it,
With the dawn that renews and restores.

My mount is but a crawling one,
Dearer to me than one of swift stride.

How often thickets sighed and swayed,
Their breeze's wafting the tread of a slow walker.

The wind blew through them, and they craned upward,
Like a crowd looking out upon delegations.

A rustle or a murmur delighted me,
Of water in the lowlands and the uplands.

At times it flowed, limpid, and at times
Gushed from the bowels of solid rock.

A delicate sparrow sang there
And taught me the ways of song.

It repeated a whistle that captivated my heart,
For it, that was the poem's crowning line.

So I said: repeat your song, O tormented one;
I ask no other song to be repeated.

We are alike, for birdsong is poetry;
Sing for an accomplished one who seeks excellence.

Otherwise you will be lost, like me, among people
I live beside, yet gain nothing from.

My dwelling among them was nothing but captivity,
And my poems were like the clanking of chains.

So remain free, and fly free; for death is
The free man's life among slaves.

I understand the language of birds, for my soul
Is like the spirits of wandering birds.

How close the loving is to the hostile!
