قَضىdecreed الدهرُtime أنthat أهواكَI love you غيرwithout مُمتَّعِgranted enjoyment
فلمso did not نجتمعwe meet يوماًever ولمand did not نتودَّعِwe bid each other farewell
Time decreed that I should love you without fulfillment,
Time decreed that I should love you without joy
So we never met, nor did we bid each other farewell.
We never met, nor bade farewell.
إذاif لمnot يكنthere be ليfor me فيin السّلامthe greeting تعلَّةٌsolace
رضيتُI accepted وداعاًa farewell منهُfrom him علّةَcomfort مُوجَعfor one in pain
If there were no solace for me in a greeting,
Had greeting you brought no distress,
I would accept a farewell from him as a sufferer's comfort.
I would have been content with painful parting.
ولكنَّand yet منone who يَهوىloves كثيراًdeeply منالُهُhis attainment
قليلٌlittle فماso how أشقىwretched الفَتىthe young man بالتولُّعthrough infatuation
Yet what one who loves deeply gains
But the lover oft attains little
Is little—how wretched is a young man in his passion!
So how wretched is the constant yearner!
وهذاand this نصيبُthe lot الطِّيبينَof the good-hearted فطالماso often
شكوتُI lamented الذيwhat أشكوهُI lament it غيرَnot مشفَّعhaving my plea granted
And this is the good-hearted's lot; so often
Such is the fate of the virtuous, though long
I have lamented what I now lament, with my plea unheeded.
Have I complained of whom I complain, with no avail.
فأنتَfor you نَسيبيmy kinsman والقرابةُand the kinship بينناbetween us
شعورٌfeeling وفهمٌand understanding فاسترحso rest وترفَّعand rise high
For you are my kinsman, and our kinship
You are a kinsman, the bond between us
Is feeling and understanding; so rest and rise on high.
Feeling and understanding, so rest, be dignified.
عهدتُكI knew you طَلقَopen الوجهِof face والكفِّand hand للألىto those who
رَجوكَthey looked to you فلمso did not تَمنَعyou withhold ولمand did not تتمنَّعyou hold yourself aloof
I knew you cheerful-faced and open-handed toward those
I knew you gentle of mien and palm, to loved ones,
Who looked to you; you neither withheld nor held yourself aloof.
I hoped in you, you did not refuse, nor hesitate.
وكنتَand you were كريماًgenerous عسرُهُhis hardship مثلُlike يُسرهِhis ease
أبىhe refused عزَّةًout of dignity أوor عفةًout of self-restraint ذلَّthe humiliation مَطمَعof covetous desire
And you were generous, alike in hardship and ease,
Noble you were, hardship like ease to you,
Spurning, through dignity or self-restraint, the abasement of greed.
You refused pride or virtue, though enticed.
فماso not ضاعwas wasted دمعُthe tears الأهلِof family والصحبِand friends فيin الأسىgrief
وقدand indeed كنتَyou were للأحبابِtoward loved ones غيرَnot مضيّعneglectful
So the tears of family and friends in grief were not wasted,
No tears of kin and friends were wasted in sorrow
For you had never neglected your loved ones.
To loved ones, you were no neglecter.
نُعيتَyour death was announced فكانso was الحزنُgrief للناسِfor the people شاملاًall-encompassing
ونَعيُكَand news of your death للأحبابِto loved ones غيرَnot مضيّعdisregarded
Your death was announced, and grief encompassed everyone,
We lost you, sorrow encompassed all,
And the news of your death was not disregarded by your loved ones.
Your loss, to loved ones was no neglect.
فلاso may not كانthere have been يومٌa day قيلَit was said فيin صُبحهِits dawn قَضىhe died

عميدٌa leader فأنسُand so the warmth الدّارِof the home وحشةُthe desolation بَلقَعof a barren waste
Would that the day had never been when, at dawn, they announced the death
No day when morn was welcomed, was said
Of a leader; the home's warmth became a wasteland's desolation.
A pillar has passed, home is lonesome wilderness.
لقدindeed شهدتwitnessed أطوادُthe mighty mountains لبنانَof Lebanon هولَهُits horror
فكادتso they almost تهيgive way منfrom هيبةٍawe وتخشّعand reverent humility
Truly, Lebanon's mighty mountains witnessed its horror,
The cedars of Lebanon witnessed its horror,
And almost gave way in awe and humble reverence.
Nearly mad with awe and trembling.
تمثّلَwas embodied يومُthe Day الحشرِof Resurrection فيهِin it ونورُهُand its light
ظلامٌdarkness كأنَّas though الجوَّthe sky وجهُa face مقنَّعveiled
The Day of Resurrection was embodied in it, and its light
The day of gathering was acted out in it, its light
Was darkness, as though the sky were a veiled face.
Darkness, as if the air and sky were veiled.
فلمso did not أرَI see فرقاًa difference بينَbetween عرسٍa wedding ومأتمand a funeral
لماbecause of what كانَthere was فيin ذاكَthat الحفالِgreat gathering المجمَّعassembled
So I saw no difference between a wedding and a funeral,
No difference I saw between wedding and funeral
Because of what was in that assembled throng.
In that thronged gathering place.
فُجِعناwe were bereaved بمنof one إحسانُهhis kindness مثلُlike حسنهِhis beauty
وأيُّand what محبٍّlover عاشَhas lived غيرَnot مروّعstricken with dread
We were bereaved of one whose kindness matched his beauty,
We mourn whom kindness was his beauty,
And what lover has lived without being stricken with dread?
What lover lives untouched by loss?
وجدناand we lavished علىupon روقِthe bloom الشّبابِof youth بدَمعِناwith our tears
فكانso it was كغيثٍlike rain فوقَupon ريانَwell-watered مُمرعlush
And we lavished our tears on the bloom of youth,
Our flowing tears upon fiery ribs showed
So they were like rain upon lush, well-watered ground.
Like rain upon fertile meadow.
وأصعبُand the hardest شيءٍthing فرقةٌparting بعدafter إلفةٍintimacy
فكمso how many a مهجةٍheart's lifeblood منهاbecause of it تسيلُflows بمدمعthrough a tearful eye
And the hardest thing is parting after intimacy;
Hardest of all is parting after closeness
How many a heart's lifeblood flows, because of it, through a tearful eye!
How many hearts spilled over!
فماso how أوجدdeeply sorrowful الإخوانُthe brothers والأخواتُand the sisters فيat
مماتِthe death الذيof one who قدindeed كانwas بهجةَthe joy أربُعof homes
How deeply the brothers and sisters grieved at
No solace did brothers and sisters find
The death of one who had been the joy of homes!
In the death that was joy to four.
مَضىhe passed away وقلوبُand the hearts الصَّحبِof friends حوليهaround him جمةٌnumerous
وأدمعُهمand their tears ماءٌwater علىupon نارِthe fire أضلعof ribs
He passed away, with a throng of friends' hearts around him,
Gone, while hearts around me stun to silence,
And their tears were water on the fire within their ribs.
Their tears like water on flaming limbs.
ومنand who ذاis it that يردُّrepels الموتَdeath عنهُfrom him وقدand already سطاhas assailed
علىupon كلِّevery ذيpossessor of عرشٍa throne وجيشٍand an army مدرَّعarmored
And who could fend death off from him, when it has fallen
Who can divert death, when it descends
Upon every lord of a throne and an armored army?
Upon thrones and armies in splendor arrayed?
فلوso if أنهthat he يفدَىis ransomed ببعضwith part of حياتناour lives
لجدناwe would give generously لهto him منfrom كلeach عمرlifespan بأربعwith four years
So if he could have been ransomed with part of our lives,
If we could ransom you with some life,
We would have gladly given him four years from every lifespan.
We would offer two lives for each of your years.
ولمand not نكُwe were يوماًever آسفينَregretful لأنّناbecause we
نُقاسمهُwe share with him ماwhat هانَbecame of little worth عندamid التفجُّعbereavement
And we would never have regretted it, because we
Never did we grieve you shared with us
Would share with him what counts for little amid bereavement.
At times of grief, common woes.
وياand oh حبّذاhow lovely ماwhat كانwas منهfrom him وذِكرُهُand his memory
لهُit has نفحاتُwafts الفاغمِof a penetrating perfume المتضوّعwafting its fragrance
And oh, how lovely was what came from him; his memory
Blessed what came from you, your memory
Has the wafts of a heady, spreading perfume.
With scents of apple in bloom.
فأنّىso where لناfor us ذيّالِكَthat الظرفُcharm والنَّدىand generosity
وتِلكَand those السَّجاياqualities بعدafter أهولِthe most dreadful مَصرَعdeath
So where shall we find that charm and generosity,
How can we have your gentle manner and charm again
And those qualities after the most dreadful death,
And those refined qualities, after so violent an end?
ولطفُand the gentleness ابتِسامٍof a smile فيin عذوبةِthe sweetness مَنطقٍof speech
وحسنُand the beauty كلامٍof words فيin حديثٍconversation منوَّعvaried
And a smile's gentleness in the sweetness of speech,
The sweet smile’s charm in gentle speech
And fine words in varied conversation?
And fine words, in diverse discourse?
فكيفَso how أُعزّيI console أهلهُhis family وأناand I الذيthe one who

So how can I console his family, when I am the one
How can I console your family, when I
Who shares their grief without pretense?
Share their sorrow, with no pretense?
ألاah ياO أخاbrother of الفتيانِthe young men كيفَhow تركتَناyou left us
فأوحَشتَso you made desolate مناamong us كلَّevery قلبٍheart ومَوضعand place
Ah, brother of the young men, how have you left us,
Oh how you left us, companions now lonely,
And made every heart and place among us desolate?
Every heart and place made desolate!
عزيزٌgrievous عليناto us أنthat تواريكَconceals you تربةٌearth
فتفقدُso loses منكَin you الدارُthe home أجملَthe loveliest مطلعdawn
It grieves us that earth should conceal you,
Dear to us, that earth should cover you,
And the home should lose, in you, its loveliest dawn.
The home robbed of its finest view.
ولوand if فزتُI had won قبلَbefore الموتِdeath منكَfrom you بنظرةٍa glance
لكانتit would have been عزاءًa consolation ليto me علىthough غيرِnot مقنعsatisfying
And had I won a glance from you before death,
Had I glimpsed you before death, not fully seen,
It would have been a comfort to me, though an insufficient one.
It would have consoled me, unsatisfied.
ولكنَّand yet نفسيmy soul لاعهاseared it الموتُdeath فيin النَّوىseparation
وليستand it was not علىwithin مرأىsight حبيبٍof a beloved ومسمعand hearing
But death seared my soul in separation,
But death's pang seized me in my sleep,
And it was not within sight or hearing of a beloved.
Far from the sight and sound of loved one.
ترنَّحتَyou swayed غصناًas a branch مزهراًflowering فيin خَميلةٍa grove
غداcame to be بعدafter طلِّthe dew الصبحِof morning يُسقىwatered بأدمعwith tears
You swayed, a flowering branch in a grove,
You sighed away, a blossoming branch in youth
That, after the morning dew, came to be watered with tears.
At dawn, to be watered with tears.
تناثرَscattered مِنكَfrom you الزَّهرُthe blossoms وارتحلَand departed الشّذاthe fragrance
فبعدَكَso after you لاnot أرجوI hope for ربيعاًa spring لمربعfor a dwelling
The blossoms scattered from you, and the fragrance departed;
Your blossoms scattered, and charm departed,
So after you, I hope for no spring in any dwelling.
After you, I hope no spring may come again.
وكنتَand you were حبيبَthe beloved الكلِّof everyone فيin علوthe height مجلسٍof a seat
فبتَّso you became فقيدَthe lost one الكلَّof everyone فيin عمقِthe depth مضجعof a resting place
And you were everyone's beloved on a lofty seat,
Beloved of all, aloft in gathering
Then you were lost to all in the depths of a resting place.
But gone, all mourn in the depth of graves.
عزاءًtake comfort ذويO those of القُربىkinship فماfor not المرءُa person خالدٌimmortal
ولوand even if حازَhe possessed دَهراًfor an age ملكَthe dominion كِسرىof Kisra وتُبّعand Tubbaʿ
Take comfort, kinsfolk, for no one is immortal,
Condolences to kin, man is not immortal
Even if for an age he possessed the dominion of Kisra and Tubbaʿ.
Though gaining reign of Chosroes and Tobba.
تأسّواtake solace بإخوانٍin brothers أُصيبواthey were bereaved بإخوةٍof brothers
فماfor not الأرضُthe earth إِلاexcept مرقدٌa resting place بعدafter مرتعa pasture
Take solace in brothers who have been bereaved of brothers,
Grieve with brothers, who lost brothers,
For earth is but a resting place after a pasture.
The earth a mere resting place after pasture.
