The winds of north and south beguiled him,

and his enemies said: Good fortune is not near him.

Waves he visits there stir his longing,

and he weeps upon their rocks and dunes.

He scattered hopes along every shore,

    and traveled brokenhearted among peoples.

Yet no soul felt a wayfarer's sorrows,

nor did a hand wipe a grieving man's tears.

So they were lost, as the jewels of his poetry were lost,

and fragments of a heart barren in despair.

When the sparrow sang, calling its mate,

and dusk's stillness filled the soul and valley,

and breezes swayed a garden's blossoms,

like hearts fluttering before a watcher,

and the summer night let its curtain fall over him,

embroidered in two hues, gleaming and dewy,

he remembered life among his kin and bent his head,

pondering the misfortunes of his days.

For a time the earth closed in on him, though so often

he had embraced it in a breast as spacious as the sky.

He said, exhausted by all his striving:

Is this a trial, or punishment for sins?

I love a kinsman: if he calls me, I answer him,

but when I call him, he does not reply.

He shunned me, for greed had frozen his heart,

yet in affliction I still love my kinsman.

for every stranger finds comfort in a stranger.

    وربَّ اغترابٍ للشّقاءِ جلوب

    We were tried, and our noble endurance awed the people;

and many an exile brings misery.

Thus a proud soul makes a man suffer,

and a heart that finds its pleasures in scars.

A free man must face calamities with resolve,

for hardship tests every discerning mind.

I face my enemies and the terrors of my exile

with a heart shining in the darkness of calamities,

and a soul that finds death sweet for glory's sake,

like an eagle thrilled by the voices of thunder.

I was not daunted by wandering lost across the earth,

nor by sleeping alone, weighed down with sorrows,

nor by exposing my body to deadly perils, seeking

a cure for an illness that baffled my physician.

Within my ribs lives a resolve that outstrips

the headlong rush of travel and the leaping of flame.

For every free man, a tear and a salute,

if this is my allotted share in the struggle.

Whatever journeys made me forget, I never forget that moment

beside our sea, as the sun was setting:

bidding Syria farewell and entrusting her with my love,

my hand in the hands of friend and kin,

and gazing longingly through my tears

at an awe-inspiring mountain, its rocks laid bare.

And the day my tender mother wept, terrified

by a farewell drawing near, dreadful as death,

and spoke in a low, faltering voice,

while a sigh from her mingled with sobbing:

My son, by God, will you return?

This farewell of yours, my son, is melting me away.

Will you not remain safe in our homeland?

For one like you was not born for a difficult ride.

I said to her, my eyelid holding back a tear:

One day I shall return; be patient and trust me,

like birds beguiled by the spring of our land,

whose flocks' yearning cries have delighted us.

Is reunion after separation not sweeter than

love that lingers, tainted with weariness?

Let me, Mother, pay glory its due,

and die nobly, like the neighbor of ʿAsib.

The eaglet delights in spreading its wings

when the wind greets its nest with a gust.

Yes, I had a necklace of love and hopes,

but it was lost, and I recovered none of its beads,

as kisses were lost upon the throat of a maiden,

deceitful, false as the waves of the seas.

So I told myself, after humiliation and grief:

Enough of the ignorant's contempt; repent.

    I long for al-Hamra with a nightingale's yearning,

startled at night by the clamor of cawing.

My heart scattered, like its feathers, upon

the calamities of time, which toys with the noble.

How, then, are the loved ones I left behind,

whom a relentless pursuer has come to torment?

The radiance of their faces shone from my heart

    as light shines through openings.

They peer out from it, one smiling face after another,

and my brow clears after long frowning.

A young girl's smile dispels my cares,

the east wind bringing fragrance from her robe.

She loved a stranger, stirring his heart

with her lisp as she uttered “my beloved.”

Upon her breast I love the drooping violet,

like an eye bewitching the minds of men.

I worship in her, between coquetry and chastity,

the beauty of youth in the dignity of age.

I cherish a brow of woodland lilies,

and a throat bearing the whiteness of milk,

adorned by a necklace of pearls, whose beads meet

upon her breast at a cross.

I say, when she takes pity on my plight and comes

to ask about my sallowness and pallor:

Thus we have shared love's wasting,

so our drawing close is no wonder.

Is she proud, admiring her people's young men,

and casting strange charges at our young men?

May you be spared separation; do not laugh at our men.

Can one gloating over the plundered feel safe from plunder?

The turns of the nights scattered them, replacing

a life of battles with a life of obscurity.

Though they wear rags, their breasts

surely bear the strongest hearts in hardship.

    فإن تُبصري أجفانهنَّ تذوبي

    All the beauty of the East is in our young women;

if you behold their eyelids, you will melt.

    Their eyes carry our sun,

and their black pupils are raisins.

They sent love forth as waves and fire, and we could not

escape, for they assailed us in many ways.

May my lifeblood ransom the freeborn Arab women,

for they are like a garden lush in spring.
