And the roars in the sea greeted you.

    Unaware that time is treacherous.

For all your renown and your many journeys?

Even if I lost the hopes that others like me have lost,

I came away from them laughing, once they were gone.

And I told my soul, "Ease your burden, for I

See long slumber after long sleeplessness.

And cast this body to the insects.

    فصبراً على مُستوَدعِ الشَّهواتِ

    Its demands, though it is base, are many;

So be patient with this storehouse of desires.

Who will stand for the weak, forever grieving?

Likewise, the secluded lady envies a slave-songstress,

And the gentle man bows to the insolent.

By graves that draw pilgrims, and mortal remains.

And my tears, mingled in pure drops.

And recited verses that surged with my tears.

Then a lament answered me there, as though

The daughters of the Arabs shared their grief, sobbing.

And after my circuit through spacious chambers,

    Adorned with calligraphy and carvings,

    Arched recesses overlooking the courtyards—
