جاءت مذكّرةً لعهدٍ غابرِ

وهوىً تقلَّصَ مثلَ ظلّ العابرِ

وهوىً تقلَّصَ مثلَ ظلّ العابرِ

She came, reminding me of a bygone time,

It came as a reminder of a bygone era

And a love that had shrunk like a passerby's shadow.

And a passion that shrank like the shadow of a passerby

والدَّمعُ في وجناتِها مُتسَلسِلٌ

والدَّمعُ في وجناتِها مُتسَلسِلٌ

مثلَ الغديرِ على الأريضِ العاطر

مثلَ الغديرِ على الأريضِ العاطر

And tears streamed down her cheeks,

And tears on her cheeks flowed

Like a brook upon fragrant, fertile ground.

Like a stream on the fragrant land

فسألتُها ماذا البكاءُ فلم تُجب

فسألتُها ماذا البكاءُ فلم تُجب

ورَنت إلى النَّجمِ البعيدِ الزاهر

ورَنت إلى النَّجمِ البعيدِ الزاهر

So I asked her, 'Why this weeping?' But she did not reply,

I asked her why the tears but she did not answer

And gazed toward the distant, shining star.

She glanced at the distant shining star

فرأيتُ نوراً سالَ من عينٍ على

فرأيتُ نوراً سالَ من عينٍ على

قلبٍ يُصفِّقهُ جناحُ الطائر

قلبٍ يُصفِّقهُ جناحُ الطائر

Then I saw a light that flowed from an eye onto

I saw a light pour from an eye

A heart against which the bird's wing beats.

On a heart fluttered by a bird's wing

وغدَوتُ أُؤمنُ بالمحبَّةِ بعدَ ما

وغدَوتُ أُؤمنُ بالمحبَّةِ بعدَ ما

جاءت بمعجزةٍ لقلبي الكافر

جاءت بمعجزةٍ لقلبي الكافر

And I came to believe in love after

And I came to believe in love after

She came with a miracle for my unbelieving heart.

It came with a miracle to my disbelieving heart

يا حبُّ فيكَ المعجزاتُ تجمّعت

يا حبُّ فيكَ المعجزاتُ تجمّعت

فلأنتَ من روحِ الإلهِ القادر

فلأنتَ من روحِ الإلهِ القادر

O Love, in you miracles have gathered,

O love! In you miracles gathered

For you are indeed of the spirit of God Almighty.

For you are from the spirit of the Able God

لولاكَ ما انتَظَمت قصائدُ شاعرٍ

فوقَ الصحائفِ كالعبابِ الزاخر

فوقَ الصحائفِ كالعبابِ الزاخر

Without you, no poet's poems would take shape

Without you no verses of a poet

Upon the pages like a surging flood.

Would have lined the pages like abundant rain

بينَ الورى انشقَّت لكَ الحجبُ التي

بينَ الورى انشقَّت لكَ الحجبُ التي

ما مسَّها يوماً قضيبُ الساحر

ما مسَّها يوماً قضيبُ الساحر

Among humankind, for you were parted the veils that

Between people the veils that

The sorcerer's wand had never touched.

No magician's wand ever touched split for you
