Say to the beauty in red silk:

What have you done to a haughty poet?

He once watched the stars in the lofty firmament,

And today he watches your necklace of jewels.

The pearls are like stars in their radiance upon

    That delicate, radiant little neck.

If your face is two gardens of paradise for a lovesick lover,

Then grant the fire's heat the coolness of Kawthar.

Beauty is a sovereign, and you are a queen

Who has surpassed the queen of Tadmor in love's dominion.

So when you see the lover humbling himself,

For God's sake, fair one, do not be haughty.

Poetry comes from the language of angels; so learn

From it the feelings of the sorrowing lover.

If you make no promise, say, 'O young man,

Patience, for victory belongs to those who persevere.'

Longing has melted me; so melt with tenderness,

For your cinched waist is as slender as my little finger.
