Promise me—is there anything in this world less than a promise?

For you will never find my like, nor attain union after me.

If one day you say to me, "I love you, young man,"

I shall be content with the sweetest thing one can say—that is my aim.

It is the perfect word for one like me, for I

am enraptured by words from shy, tender-limbed maidens.

I love to inhale breaths that, when they waft their fragrance,

remind me of the scent of violets and roses.

    فلا تجحدي رَبَّ المحاسنِ بالصدّ

    My beautiful tormentress, your Lord is benevolent;

so do not be ungrateful to the Lord of beauty by turning away.

You have strung lovers' hearts into a necklace,

but this heart is the necklace's centerpiece.

So if one day you march like Zaynab of Palmyra,

then tell them, "This young man is commander of the troops."

For your sake I watch the stars; would that you were a star

rising from the blue dome for me alone.

Nor am I an astronomer watching the planets,

yet I have an observatory built on a mountain in India.

How often the light of secluded chambers has stirred my longing in the dark,

and my eye's delight lies in watching for light and sleeplessness.

Will you then lift the curtain one day, to shine

upon the heart as the crescent shines upon the grave?

Your robe holds a garden, green and blooming,

and your mouth holds the delight of wine and honey.

So how lovely is the embroidery, finely wrought by your fingertips,

on velvet from which the cheek draws its softness.

Nor is one blameworthy who enjoys an hour

of beauty; rather, blameworthy is the devotee of asceticism.
