Our beloved ones, can the mind rest easy in separation,

When foes and reproachers have multiplied around me?

    وإن كمنوا ليلاً فأمشي وأختال

    When they frown at the dawn, I smile at the darkness;

And if they lurk at night, I walk and swagger.

I recalled the days in the homeland, full of longing,

And my heart sways with the boughs in the garden.

Do you, then, remember me on the nights of our spring,

While their mist and shadows have stirred my longing?

And I truly come alive through a greeting whenever

    A breeze passes, bearing greetings.

So, by God, whenever the east wind blows, greet

A youth as fleeting as a shadow and a phantom.

    He composes his poetry to the beats of the heart;

For he is no weigher of verse, nor a plagiarist.

His poems have scattered from his own soul,

As a bird's feathers scatter while the bird journeys on.

Is it not a sin that separation should ruin him,

So that he dies a martyr, though he bears adversity?

Who, then, will console him and ease his heart

With an open hand that improves his lot?

    فأضجَرهُ حلٌّ وأضناهُ ترحال

    He has indeed gone forth, hiding what flowed from his wounds;

So staying put vexed him, and travel wore him down.

And people's baseness and greed froze his tears,

So neither Salma nor the ruins made him weep any longer.

And it was easy for him to give his life,

And travel by night while the earth was full of fear and terrors,

As a soldier bared his breast in war,

And heroes gloried in wounds from sword and spear.

My breast has indeed borne light and fire:

So the mind is illumined, and the soul set aflame.

I always see my resolve renew my zeal,

And no burdens weigh down one like me.

    فما نافِعي خلٌّ ولا مُسعِدي خال

    And I put no trust in friends or family;

For no friend is of use to me, nor does a maternal uncle aid me.

If God grants me a long life,

I shall act; if not, how can death's appointed times be averted?

And a woman of coy charm bade me farewell one evening,

There beneath the spreading trees, with tears pouring down.

So I said, having kissed a cheek that seemed

A carnation with the morning dew roaming within it:

Compose yourself; do not weep for the departing man who

Goes forth, his soul full of resolve and hopes.

Let the heart play with hope and love,

And pray; perhaps God will rejoin the cord.

I shall brave the waves in pursuit of glory,

As a hawk swoops down or a lion advances.

When the full moon overlooking the homeland stirs you,

And the waves moan and wail upon the sand,

And with the breezes comes the fragrance of our fields,

And the woodland boughs rustle while the water flows,

Stand where we used to meet each night

And shed tears more precious than kingship and wealth,

And cast a greeting like the flame of a star,

For which night's veil was rent and the mirage blazed.
