O water that has wasted my infatuation, is kissing so precious to you?
If this passion and logic were jurisprudence, enumeration and causation would facilitate them.
Eyes are evidence of hearts, and little is proof of much.
As for your love, it has taken firm hold of my limbs. When will my suffering cease?
And thirsty, I seek a kiss from the lips, for neither the Tigris nor the Nile were what I sought.
Bestow a union on me before youth passes, for roses in springtime soon fade.
There is no beauty but in youth, no love but both fade after youth and are soon gone.
And poetry is like a fountain from the heart of a youth, flowing forever to illuminate beauty.
So enjoy yourself before old age and give me enjoyment. For freshness in autumn time is little.
And pluck the flowers and cull fragrance from them while the branch of your form still bends toward me.
The branch is hoped for its shade in freshness, and the grass for the morning dew by night.
Youth is a fickle jester with a song of love and weeping in passion.
It is as if half of it were a sapling and half of it decrepit.
How short is its briefest and how long is its mention! Have you seen the days of spring endure?
And perhaps your beauty and love will pass. Hearts turn with faces.
I pine for the night of union and our sleep is little, like happiness and fidelity.
Its stars in your eyelashes, their brightness, and the heart with you is guided and lost.
Its crescent, as hollow as your slender waist, and its dawn as beautiful as life.
And toward a dawn in which you walked lightly, a crown of years upon your brow,
Where the branches extended their shade over you and their breeze was languid as eyelids.
And for your distracted morning cup there was pleasant contemplation and upon contemplation agonizing delay.
So you gathered from those flowers a nosegay and the dew in it courses.
Your eyes cull my heart for a flower and your speech is the Qur’an and the Bible.
How often you said to me with alluring subtlety that the beauty is to waste the envious.
So I sighed longingly and responded that love is for cheeks to turn sallow.
