O ring that gleams on my finger,

You shone like a star over the barren waste.

You were my mother's, then became mine.

So if I die far away, you shall be buried with me.

You comforted me with remembrance in my loneliness,

And you are on my finger and within my ribs.

My mother's ring, you are a talisman,

Stronger and more protective for me than coats of mail.

How often you have given me strength!

Without you, I would not have ventured or shown courage.

Her memory in you guided me toward

That which safeguards the loftiest honor.

By God, you shall not be removed after death

From me—and to this day you have not been removed.

And when you grow dull, O my ring,

I polish you with kisses and tears.
