O nights of separation, how long will you let fall a veil,

so that remembrance of loved ones may haunt me more grievously?

And so you string precious necklaces from my tears,

for which my verse is deemed a dwelling in eternity.

    Tears lit your darkness, guiding

a heart to patience, never to weary or despair.

And when I saw despair bearing a dagger,

I decreed that my heart should remain armored.

For no wandering star, when it rises radiant,

is lovelier in its rising than that heart in calamity's gloom.

Your sighing groves have heard me

lamenting; I delight when they lament and I listen.

And your roaring waves have seen me

gesturing farewell to the distant star.

And your fragrant breaths have carried to me

a sigh and verse more fragrant than the scent of musk.

I recalled the bygone nights, and they appeared to me,

drawing aside a veil from the face of happiness.

And they conjured for me youth's smiling phantom,

stretching out his arms for embraces about the waist.

Yes, I was a charmer to every shy maiden,

and my heart was a pasture for beauty.

You departed white, smiling upon my joy,

and came back black, granting no hope.

Oh, how dear those nights and their sweetness!

Yet how hopeless that they should listen to me and return!

I try to forget within you, because I

have found forgetting more helpful to lovers.

Yet a memory that melts my soul

passes by, leaving me lovesick and enthralled.

O night among the nights, whom I have loved,

whisper encouraging words to my heart.

    You pass, white-sashed and light,

the wind ruffling your mantle and veil.

And it sighs, breathing out perfumes, just as

you have heard the broken breathing of a yearning lover.

When you visit those homes and their people,

rocking a bed of white hopes,

there a mother sheds tears; pass by

gently, so she may forget me a little and sleep.

And likewise charge a star from the eastern quarter

to tell her, "We must come together."

And I do find your pale brow sweet,

and your hair, hanging loose and studded with stars.

And I yearn for the edges of your trailing skirts,

over which my tears and dew's tears flowed together.

And in that dense garden lies a lake,

upon which I scattered your broken necklace.

Like its beads, my loved ones' eyes shone

within my heart, yet dearer and brighter than that necklace.

By the tears of dew, do you remember how I stood

there, watching over your emerging full moon?

It appears and hides, like happiness at play,

shy, wrapped in the gauze of clouds.

    I see the smiles of dawn appear upon the hills;

so has the time come to bow my brow in farewell?

Have mercy, go gently; do not pass swiftly,

for haste brings death to the lovesick lover.

Take for yourself something of my sighing and my tears,

and keep it as a remembrance lodged between your breasts.

    لعلَّ له منها شفاءً ومقنعا

    And give my heart a breath from your veil;

perhaps from it will come healing and contentment for my heart.

Stay; let us share our sorrows amid water and greenery,

for one who weeps in pain does not pretend to weep.

Let us recall the forgotten and freshen the withered,

unfold what is folded and rain upon a spring meadow.

Three years of my youth have slipped away,

and what the soul desires flees swiftly.

I have been stripped bare, as a bird is stripped of feathers,

so my verse became an echo of lamentation.

By the joy and serenity you have bestowed on me,

which melt my heart with delight and reverence,

if, after me, a lover comes, recalling love,

and laments a separation in which he squandered his youth,

and lays a burdened brow within your arms,

then tell him, "That man left no path unexplored.

Many have lamented like him and suffered,

yet I have seen no lover more ardent or anguished than he.

I shall set my star shining above his grave,

for his was a soul loftier than the stars."
