O mother, verdant spring has greeted you;
Oh mother, may spring greet you with vigor
your face gleams in my heart, radiant.
While you remain shining in my heart

O mother, do not weep for your fledgling, who
Oh mother, do not cry for your fledgling that
went far away, and whose wing is now broken.
Departed and whose wing is now broken

Did not remembrance of you stir a sparrow that began
Did the memory of you not excite a little bird that
to greet the light or feed a little one?
Brought light or chirped faintly?
أحنُّI yearn إِلىfor مرآكِthe sight of you فيin دارِdwelling غربتيmy exile
وأحسدُand I envy أفراخاًfledglings تزينُadorn وُكوراnests
I long for the sight of you in my dwelling of exile,
I yearn for the sight of you in my foreign abode
and envy fledglings that adorn nests.
And envy the chicks adorning their nests
وأستقبلُand I welcome الأنسامَthe breezes كلَّevery صَبيحةٍmorning

And I welcome the breezes every morning,
And every morn I welcome the breeze
to draw strength and fragrance from them.
To gain from it strength and fragrance

And I let sunlight into my breast and my eye,
I let the sunlight enter my chest and eyelids
and release a sigh from between my ribs.
And exhale a sigh from between my ribs
أياO أمِّmy mother هذاthis النأيُdistance لمdid not يُبقِleave لذةًpleasure
لِقَلبيfor my heart فإنيfor I قدindeed عريتُI grew bare نضيراfresh and green
O mother, this distance has left no pleasure
Oh mother, this separation has left
for my heart; I have grown bare while still green.
No joy for my heart, for I was stripped of companionship
فأصبحَso became غُصنيmy branch يابساًdry فيin رَبيعهِits springtime
وأصبحَand became زَهريmy blossoms فيin الهواءِthe air نَثيراscattered
So my branch grew dry in its springtime,
So my branch has withered in its spring
and my blossoms became scattered in the air.
And my flower is scattered in the air

My youth departed; I gained nothing from its beauty,
My youth passed without enjoying its beauty
and my lot was to count months—
And my lot was to count months

Months passed, taking my hopes and joy
and have left my long reach short.
Leaving behind my long life now short
أياO أمِّmy mother والأمواجُand the waves تَفصُلُseparate بينناbetween us
فأسمعُand I hear مِنهاfrom them فيin الظلامِthe darkness هَديراa roar
O mother, the waves separate us,
Oh mother, while waves separate us
and I hear their roar in the darkness.
I hear from them murmuring in the dark
وأبكيand I weep عليهاover them آسفاًsorrowful متشوِّقاًyearning
وآملُand I hope منهاfrom them أنthat تَفُكَّthey set free أسيراa captive
And I weep over them, sorrowful and yearning,
I cry over them, yearning and longing
and hope they will set a captive free.
Hoping they would free this captive

So at times I long to compose verse, for I
So I long to compose poetry sometimes
love the captive nightingale's whistle.
For I love the warbling of the lovelorn nightingale
عَهدتُكِI have known you فيin الظلماءِthe darkness ترعينَyou watch over نجمتيmy star

I have known you to watch over my star in the darkness,
I knew you in the dark watching over my star
and your heart yearns, throbbing to take flight.
With your heart fluttering, wanting to fly
فإنso if يَغشَهاcovers it الغَيمُthe clouds الكثيفُdense تَبسَّميsmile
لعلَّperhaps لهاfor it بعدَafter الأفولِsetting ظهوراa reappearance
So if dense clouds veil it, smile;
If dense clouds veil it, smile
perhaps it will reappear after setting.
Perhaps after setting it will rise again

لعلَّperhaps لهfor it يوماًone day عليَّto me مزوراa visit
And cast greetings upon the breath of the east wind,
Send my greetings to the soul of youth
perhaps it will visit me one day.
Perhaps one day it will visit me
