O flower from the beloved of my heart,

Your fragrance spread and eased my anguish.

I envied you when you were plucked one morning

By fingers that nearly carried my wits away.

    فرقَّق شِعري ولطّفَ حبّي

    I breathed in fragrance from you and her;

It softened my verse and made my love tender.

So you are dear for her sake,

And for the sake of a sweet memory there.

Do you feel what I feel, and do you

See the breeze as a caravan's greeting?

And is there a homeland you grieve for?

And are you between love and war?

    A stranger, I yearned; lovesick, I wept

At the roar of waves and the plaintive cry of a flock.

Yes, you are wilting, while I

Melt at the memory of my family and friends.

We both long for our own land,

And a life gone by, sweet and fresh.

    فكيف تلذُّ له ريحُ غرْبِ

    My heart grew used to breathing the east wind;

So how can a west wind delight it?

I placed you in water one morning, just as

I placed love for her who plucked you in my heart.

And withering is inevitable; how often

I have seen flowers and grass wither.

And if my heart perishes like you, will it

See flowers above my bones and dust?
