O author of “Do not reproach him,” peace

Upon your sighs at the hour of death.

    فروحي وروحُك إلفا حمام

    You wept as a stranger and made me weep;

For my soul and yours are a bonded pair of doves.

And how many a love-stricken poet wept

Over the twin ruins of a dwelling and love,

And lived on a deceptive hope,

Yet his soul attained no goal.

Whenever we built the palaces of hope,

We saw their ruins and the wreckage.

We both suffered: you died, and I nearly

Died, for sickness wasted my body.

And my youth passed swiftly, and never

Did a phantom of good fortune visit me, even in a dream.

We strove for the best of things, without

    Reward, while the ignoble triumphed.

To suffer, with no smile upon the lips.

Wastelands, and grew gray from excessive care.

So the whistling was lost, and the abode grew cramped.

And your poetry rent the veil of the ages,

And your memory in it is like lavender's fragrance.

So East and West echoed it, and it became

Vengeance for your soul after death.

Am deeply in love with the poetry of feeling.

Your rhymes, which are bloodied arrows?

To the melodies of longing and sorrow.

Consoling you as beauty behind a veil.

Its echo repeated beneath the darkness!

Yet to humankind they are unintelligible speech.

Like her who was raised in tents,

Rousing an army and reciting poetry,

And mounting the steed and polishing the sword.

    And better than these sons

Are the bones of the great conquering forefathers.

Where, then, is proud self-respect, and where is generosity?

And where is faithfulness, and where the bond of honor?

Despite our loss, we live by hope,

Perhaps stars lie behind the clouds.

Then let us sing and forget our cares,

For tomorrow life is surely bound to end.
