No dwelling, when the loved ones have departed, is a home.

For the heart is wherever love and its desires are.

The soul has its abode within the beloved's soul,

And so it is with breezes and the hours before dawn.

The bird follows its mate and its chicks,

Though in every thicket it has nests.

Indeed, hearts are stars in mutual attraction,

And every heart has a wandering planet.

    Alas for the beloved—for she

Departed, and after her the lights sank from sight.

The winds went forth, driving her and driving me,

As clouds are driven, their tears pouring down.

I have not forgotten her glances on the day of farewell,

And thus I learned what trees and remembrances are.

And when hearts scatter their blossoms,

No flowers in any garden are desired.
