    وأقصَرُ ليلٍ في الهُمُومِ طَويلُ

    My night has grown heavy, and the darkness is heavy;

And even the shortest night is long amid sorrows.

As though leaden grief lay upon my heart,

And there is no path to noble patience.

So how could I, with darkness upon darkness around me,

And no light within it, and the lamp so dim?

So the sky is but the grave of a sunken star,

Toward which the eye yearns, though weary.

It is night, a passage and playground for spirits,

And within it the wind sighs and wails.

And beneath its darkness, souls wailed to one another,

Yet the burning thirst of those souls was not quenched.

A night has truly terrified me: its stillness is feared

By the ailing, while one slain lies hidden in its darkness.

And it lets its veil fall over the worst of crimes,

And in it the sleepless and the lover despair.

It is night: it hides woe while people sleep,

And death's sword gleams above the sleepers.

And how often, in it, sleeplessness overtakes the anxious,

So I kindle my heart as a candle, and it melts.

And I may take solace in Imru' al-Qays, saying:

A dawn will rise, beautiful as hope,

And the sun's light will disperse thickly massed clouds,

And a breeze will drift by as the branches sway.

So may I taste death only in the morning,

And may the ailing die only in the light.
