فوقَabove بُردٍa mantle مُهلهلٍloosely woven فضفاضِample and loose
My night grew long from her rippling hair,
Her long night was adorned with soft tresses
Above a loosely woven, ample mantle.
Above a shivering cold and ample dress
ثغرُهاher mouth العذبُsweet فيهِin it رقراقُshimmering water وادٍa valley
شفَّgrew transparent يومَon the day of الهجيرِthe midday heat عنrevealing رَضراضِpebbles
Her sweet mouth holds a valley's shimmering water,
Her sweet lips amidst them were gently babbling
That grew clear in the midday heat, revealing pebbles.
As though they quenched, on day of halt, a deep eagerness
فهيso she is روضٌa garden منof الجمالِbeauty أريضٌlush and spacious
ليfor me غِنىًsufficiency فيهِin it عنwithout need of جميعِall الرياضِthe gardens
So she is a lush, spacious garden of beauty,
So she is a garden of beauty and chastity
In it I find enough to need no other garden.
To me much wealthier than any other garden
حينَwhen جادتshe was generous بخدِّهاwith her cheek قلتُI said هذاthis
ليسَis not شيئاًanything عِنديto me ولستُand I am not براضِsatisfied
When she offered her cheek, I said: This
When she offered me her cheek, said I:
Is nothing to me, and I am not satisfied.
“This is nothing to me though I'm not content”
مَنwhoever تجُدis generous بالقليلِwith a little تُعطِwill give كثيراًmuch
إنَّindeed بُشرىglad tidings السحابِthe clouds بالإيماضِwith lightning flashes
She who gives a little will give much;
Who is self-satisfied with little, will be given plenty
Indeed, the clouds' glad tidings come with lightning flashes.
Indeed clouds promise rain when they gather
فاقشَعرَّتso she shuddered لجرأتيat my boldness ثمَّthen قالتshe said
رَدعُrestraining هذاthis الصبيّboy بالإعراضِby turning away
So she shuddered at my boldness, then said:
She then shuddered at my daring words and said:
The way to curb this boy is to turn away.
“Restrain this lad with rejection”
إنماonly حبُّهُhis love شفيعٌan intercessor إليناwith us
فعليناso we must بالغضّlower the gaze أوor بالتغاضيoverlook
His love alone intercedes with us,
His love intercedes for us after all
So we must lower our gaze or turn a blind eye.
So we should ignore or pardon him
نلتُI won منهاfrom her بالذلِّthrough abasement عزاًhonor وقوليand my saying
رُبَّmany an عزٍّhonor قدindeed نلتهُI won it بانخفاضby humbling oneself
I won honor from her through abasement, and I say:
With humility before her I gained glory and said:
Many an honor have I won by humbling myself.
“Much glory I gained through surrender”
هكذاthus الذلُّabasement فيin الهوىlove لمرامٌindeed a goal
وحياةُand life الإنسانِof humankind بالأغراضthrough aims
Thus, abasement in love is indeed a goal,
Thus surrender in love has its pride
And human life rests on aims.
And life of man has but purposes
